    GPS lap timing

    Right.

Got one of these new all singing all dancing phones arriving tomorrow to upgrade from my old W850i, which all you youngsters snigger at when I pull it out to take a piccie...so got something called an HTC Desire in black to play with.

    Apparently it has GPS.

What I want is an app that has pre installed maps of UK racing tracks and a reliable timing system so I can discreetly time my laps.

My mate runs a company making phone apps, he says it is doable. Any out there already?

Was going to suggest www.racechrono.com but they haven't an android version :(

Not found any for my Desire... Great phone BTW.
Unfortunately the Race Chrono program is not yet made for Android...

    http://www.racechrono.com/

There are literally hundreds of apps you can download for free....
Just not found any track timing program.
But found one that measures 60ft. time, 1/8 mile time, 1/4 mile time.
Ideally you will need a blue tooth GPS which is much faster than the inbuilt.

That would be a nice little app. I presume you are thinking of something along the lines of just restarting the stopwatch everytime it passes the start line and storing the previous laptime? You shouldn't even need a map of the circuit in order to be able to do that, as circuits generally start and finish in the same place so it is just a case of when you pass over the same spot that you started it at. I think if you want something more sophisticated that plots speeds at each point on the circuit then there is a lot more in the 'software' side that would need doing. This is already possible with something like the DL1 logger that I use - they don't make much of it on their site but basically you click one button in the software and it overlays the whole lot over a Google map of wherever it was recorded (be it a circuit, hillclimb road, drag strip, etc.) http://www.race-technology.com/dl1_2_27.html
A standalone logger also gives other advantages like recording the revs, throttle position, etc. alongside the speed/lap time data, but I'm sure a phone app that performed a much cut down set of functionality would still have a decent market.

    Cheers Chet.

So will this work on my Android Desire phone?

The Dyno one looks fun too!
