    Metal pipe

Runs across the engine into the inlet manifold area. What is it?

    Vacuum pipes?

Whereabouts exactly? Could be the fuel rail at a guess. That runs between the inlet fanny mould and the rocker cover.

I'm guessing your refering to the pipe that feeds the brake servo. Runs around the front and side of the engine and one end goes into the inlet fannimold and the other is connected to a rubber pipe sleeved with heat resistant material that then goes into the servo.

If its not that, I've just wasted a lot of time and energy typing all this crap.

Yeah i think your description is spot on. Anyay its rusting. What do i do?

    Nothing.

Although I suppose you could take it off (easy enough) and rub it down and repaint it with satin black aerosol. Its very, very unlikely to actually rust enough to corrode right through though.
