    Rebuild Advice

My car (1.8 16v) has been off the road for nearly a year now and I finally have some money together to get it sorted. After speaking to a couple of garages I have been given a price of around £1500 for a drive in drive out rebuild of my current engine,

I thought that replacing the bottom end from one with a 2.0 on rebuild would bring some power gain but I have been told that its only worth doing if Im spending big money and it would be worth spending my budget solely on rebuilding the 1.8 and getting the best from that.

I have around £2000 to spend, is there anyone who has been in a similar position? What would be the best thing to do and what gains could I expect?

get a williams lump in it... will cost the same amount to rebuild, or someone lime Craig (aka stan) mite be able to sort you out a bit cheaper.

Or someone like me would be happy to do the work for a bit less, but there is no insurance etc.

As above, drop a williams lump in!

Even top price ones are only about £600 from what I can see, and if you were feeling brave you could even tackle it yourself...

I'd get a williams engine and spend the change on cams/pulleys and whatever else you can afford.

yeah I know somewhere I can get a williams engine but my problem with this is with it being a used engine it has every chance of going wrong within a couple of months of installation but if I have a engine rebuilt I will know how its been treated and it will surely have less chance of breaking.....?

£1500 for a full rebuild... FFS I'm in the wrong business.

TBH if you've got £2k I'd F7R it, reshell its B/E, Valves out the head, decoke it, new stem seals, refit and relap the valves and then cam it up like Stan said which for £2k.... I think that's just about possible.
