    Steering rack..

Right, pretty sure it getting worse.

At around 70/80mph there is loads of play, id say boardering on the dangerous side.

Anything above that is a bit scary, the car doesnt feel safe. Hard to explain. Sound familiar?

Doesnt feel too bad on play with the steering wheel when stationary.

    Any advice?

    New one? Welded?

    Cheers

sounds like a balancing problem as it only occurs with speed.

    Ok, good stuff.

What makes you say these two points?

What are symptoms of goosed steering rack?

Because those where my symptoms, at motorways speeds it was really dodgy, car would wander all over the lane of its own accord, when it was stationary there seemed to be no play.

Once the car was in the air you could tell easily there was play.

Disagree with the balancing comment, that would cause vibration at certain speeds, not play in the steering

ok, so play in track rods or ends?

Do i check those by putting the wheels straight and waggling from side to side and if theres play they need replacing?

specifically check these by getting under the car, unbolting them from the hub, and seeing if there is any play,m it will only be fractional, but fractional at 70 makes a big difference.

Dunno if there is an easier way to specifically check these

Depending on how badly worn they are you can jack the car up leaving the wheel on then feel for play by wobbling (technical term :D ) back and forth

Isn't that only good for checking the bearings though??

No, bearings will be movement up and down as well as side to side and a rumbling noise when wheel is spun

LBJ is movement top and bottom as above.

steering is side to side, but as above you'll only notice the movement is its really badley ****ed, couldn't notice any movement on mine unless you moved the arm after it was disconnnected from the hub, and even then it was only a VERY smal amount of movement
