RenaultSport putting the Williams name on the car due to their success in F1.

Original rally car was a 16v (valver)

Rally rules changed to allow 2litre engine.

Reno had no 2 litre engine car suitible so they 'homologated' (made enough road going versions) the Williams to allow them to enter the car to the rally class with a 2 litre engine.

The Williams badge was a marketing plan to make the car more appealing to the British public following the success of the 1992 ansd 1993 F1 Renault Williams cars
