    Engine Oils

    What oil do you guys recommend for running an engine in and also which grade of gearbox oil is recommended??

    any good semi synthetic oil. i use valvoline.

    you can,t run an engine in on mobil 1 its too good and does not let the rings bed in.

    cheapo 10 or 15 /40 is ideal for running engine in. less friction reducers and detergents.

    What do you think of that STP engine treatment additive - is it worth it

    forte treatment is good but you need to run the engine in first.

    Something just occurred to me, I always switch to synthetic oil on my new cars by second oil change. Maybe that's the reason why it take a few thousand miles for the engines to loosen itself. But then again, I have not had any problems with them, other then slow bed in.

    engines always take time usually ten thousands miles to really loosen up. mobil 1 is so good i,ve known it stop rings running in. even had to restrip an engine for a customer and rehone it with new rings. used mobil 1 from new and it was drinking oil as the rings failed to bed in.

    In my case, I mostly use Carlube synthetic (or some other economy syn oil) which is probably halfway between Mobil 1 and semi-syn. Mobil 1 is too expensive for my quick oil change habit anyway.
