View Full Version : Cooling Questions - Stat/Temps/Aux Pump/Rad Fan...
right, i had a low temp 82c stat in the car which ive recently changed because i wanted the car running at the correct temp and with it being winter i thought it might have been being over cooled
got a new stat from Renault, 89c one it is....
fitted that and now my temps are a LOT higher, previously the stat would open up just after the first main bar, 1/3rd way up......once that happened it would drop to below that bar and the temps would fluctuate back and forth depending on driving/traffic etc........now, it goes all the way up to the 2nd main bar, 2/3rds, then the stat opens and it drops to about half way on the gauge, etc etc
to me this temp seems too high, both the 1.4RT engine and the GTT engine ive had before all ran around the 1/3rd mark
also, prior to putting the new stat in, the rad fan would kick in at about half way, now it doesnt seem to, in fact its rarely coming on at all
could the gauge sensor be faulty and giving too high readings, and previously it was being over cooled
also, the aux pump, i didnt even know this existed and ive never ever heard it come on, tonight when i got back home i bridged the connector to make it come on, which it did, it went off when i turned the ignition on though, and im sure i read the fan should come on aswell, which it didnt
sorry for the long post but i want to know the car cooling system is 100% and if anything isnt workin as it should be i want to get it fixed before the proper winter comes....

Seems high. IMO, the second main bar and beyond is the boil-over zone. Even in the very hot environment I drive in - a few mm below the second bar is the max I would consider normal. And what with it being winter and all that over there, I would expect the needle to be hanging around the first major bar. You'd probably be OK for the next few months, but I think the car might boil-over in the summer heat.
I agree, my old 89 one from reno used to run like your saying Brun, but that was generally in summer when it was hot, in winter i don't think it went above the half way mark between the 2 major marks! And the fan came in at the second major mark or just after!
somethin isnt right then, looks like im gonna have to change it, again !
Thats what mine does, doesn't get much over half way mow in teh winter unless i'm on teh motorway at high speeds
with the 82c one in, mine never got properly to half way even on the hottest days of summer, if it did the fan kicked in and knocked it back down, it would run at the 1/3 mark
thats how mine runs fella, i personally think thats how reno made it as martins old williams was spot on for that!
how olds your radiator and whats the condition?
I'd either say try another one form reno, or take the one out thats already in and test it in boiling water, see what temp it opens at, or just pop your old one back in?

is there an air-lock?
shouldnt be, ive bled the rad a few times and i ran it without the cap off after i did the stat and refilled
Sounds fine to me, it's what mine runs at.
What was normal on the gauge before, i.e. in the summertime?

Put the low temp stat back in.
Mat.
that looks like what im gonna be doing on Tuesday
thing is though my blowers now blow hot, which is why i changed it in the first place, so going back to the 82c one ill have coldish blowers again
Why not keep it in for the the warm blower during the winter months. And swap back to the old stat when the weather turns warmer. That way you get best of both worlds.
true but im worried the car might overheat, id rather freeze than have a problem with the car lol

Your blowers should still be hot with the lower stat in.
Mat.
it won't overheat mate, mine went right to the top once when my fan switch wasn't connected (when i first bought the car) as i didn't know and decided to wait until the fan came in, but (touch wood) it's been fine since!
As long as it doesn't run higher than the second mark all day long i think it will be ok, but if you want it spot on with no heaters then put the low temp one back in!

It shoud hit the 2nd main bar about 2/3 of the way up the guage and settle back to about 1/2 way. That temp is fine, stop worring about it. I worried at first when I put the std one back in, but I ran it at Haynes and Ty Croes with no bother at all.
As per Danny, mine's gone in to the red before now due to a faulty fan switch and everything's a-ok.

England is always super hot tho...you ain't gonna freeze m8!
Next time your in the car, wait until it gets 'too hot' in your opinion and feel the block. I doubt it'll even be that warm.....
speaking of low temp thermostats, any one got a part number?
the MotoRad one is a 276-82, available at any Motor World branch
ive had some odd cooling things realted in the past
check the thin pipe to the bottle, my old engines was blocked!
along with massive amounts of crap in the system, including egg shell!
that engine was screwed!
i think ive now realised why ive got high temps but im too embarassed to admit it LOL
should be sorted tomorrow as long as im not still ill
go on! admit it!
we will only point and laugh for a little bit!!
I reckon hes put the stat in back to front.
the worst thing is, it wouldnt fit in backwards because there is like a piece of metal sticking out the housing to stop you, but, er, i cut a piece of that away to make it fit
but, er, i cut a piece of that away to make it fit
yes, i know !
im going putting it the right way around now, ill take pics if i remember
lol
luckily i was ill so i have hardly drove the car in the past week

just in case someone looks at that pic without reading the whole thread, thats how NOT to fit the thermostat, though hopefully no1 would be as stupid as i was, lol
its made bugger all difference to temps !
grrrrrr
gonna have to do it AGAIN !!!.....and put the 82c back in

Where's the dial sitting at? If its the 2nd big mark at roughly 2/3 of the guage then it's fine.
at that, but that seems to high to me, even the GTT engine ran cooler than that and that had the turbo to cool

That temp is fine lad. Renault design these things to run at that temp for a reason so IMO it's best not to bugger about with it. Like I said before, mine's been running at that for 6 months now and I've had no trouble at all, even on 2 trackdays, one of which was spent in 2nd gear at high revs all the time!
