I think you need to redrill the front wheel arch trim clip holes Graham - then paint the car. would be a killer to have to drill into fresh paint and loose all the protection it gives.

Take the front wheel arch liners with you to double check.

Words of wisdom...did you get the holes drilled?

Looking good though, are we upto date now with the pictures?

Im impressed with the bonnet repair - good to finally see inside one.

Im not having a go at all Graham, but I can also see the drivers front wing needs its lower retaining hole putting back in like the passenger side.

Are they giving you a hand to get refit all the panels and then get the car home?

katbloke
28-04-2015, 09:32
OK j do remember seeing one in situ. They are doing the body panel reassembly so they will discover that. Thanks for the hole advice I completely forgot it whilst trying to focus on the money side of things. When the shell is flattened and polished it will be coming home for me to make water tight. I plan uncovering all relevant parts shortly

Looking good matey. The hole on the passenger side inner wing (near the slam panel etc) doesn't necessarily need to be there unless you have the brake pad wear sensor still there, just make sure you have the drivers side hole there for the horn wire :)
It's coming on rather quick and nice. Must get a thread up myself :)

Just been out to the garage to take some pics so you can see how I cleaverly mounted the engine on the stand.
Lucky I wasnt smug about it, I have done exactly the same as you, using the bottom bell housing holes not realising that this was part of the sump, what a muppet!
So please tell me how you resolve the situation as the engine is not an area that I have got to yet - plenty for me to do yet!

Don't say stuff like that Northy...now you're going to cause me to rip mine apart!

Nice to see the project coming on; apparently it's best to leave the shell for 8 weeks or so before beginning to rebuild, there's less chance of marking the lacquer then. I think the hardest part of the project will be not damaging the paintwork on the rebuild!

how are you painting the block?

22-06-2015, 18:13
Hi Rich, ive got spray VHT black for the block and any black components like the Power steering, and aluminium spray for the obvious aluminium bits, would like to keep the head natural but not sure it will be achievable, sump will ge.
have and cleaned and painted, i have a full engine gasket set and stretch bolts on order but still some tearing down to do.

Might buy a parts washer dont know yet

You can cut a slot in the sump bolt using a fine cutting disk on a grinder, then use a heavy duty screwdriver in the slot and angle it 45 degrees to the right. Smack the top of the screwdriver with a hammer and it'll undo. Worked with several of mine.

Is it the drivers side driveshaft? As above re sucking of the eggs...have you removed the roll pin?

The speedo cable is easy when you have the knack. As long as you depress the side lugs, it will come out...if its never been off before you've have to seriously yank that frigger to get it to budge. It can take more force than you think it can take!.

Block prepping progress, quite please with how its going even if very slowly, 1 side of the block has cleaned up really well but the front hasnt come up as good some rust staining remains making painting pointless so ive currentl got that side soaking in Bilt Hamber Deox Gel and ive covered it with cling film to keep the moisture in and to allow it to work overnight (in theory) its an old pot of gel so not sure how well it will work but hey ho.

Its shiney Danno being enamel, by the time the other stuffs bolted on i think it will be a good tough finish

must admit im with danno - think a sprayed finish rather than brushed would have been my choice.

But its always nice to see something shiny pal.

Yeah no worries bud, pop by for a cuppa. Just changing my oil after 1500miles. Do you think that is extreme? Ha ha

G60 may be replaced with an r32 in the winter. Should make the mk1 fly! Not like its doing that now 😂

Hey Mate, this looks epic. I browsed the whole thread with my mouth opened. :D

A question: did this subframe thing came originally in primer colour? I had this done by previous owner, but it needs respraying and i'm wonder how it should be made as i'm aiming for a pure original Will.

yes, a close match to the original is ford polar grey.
