SHOULD BE ORANGE SHOULDNT IT? DIFFICULT TO TELL THROUGH BOTTLE BUT IM SURE MINES IS A BIT BROWNY IN COLOUR, WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?
Mine used to be brown, but now it's bright green (Thanks to Lunner) 8)

It could be picking up rust or crap or something on its route? It might be worth flushing the system and then seeing if it happens again??
ps I'm no expert :wink:
mine was a dark blacky colour, suspected head gasket going, so flushed it and replaced it and the ****ing stuff i put in was comma xtreme, and that started off as a horrible dark colour

Coolant is blue or green usually, depending on where you buy it.
If its brown it means its full of rust and isnt cooling your engine properly because the aditives have broken down and rust saturated water isnt the best collant. Bye bye head gasket.

hmmm - i sense a coolant flush coming on this weekend! :oops:
30 minute job at most, just use plenty of water and flush it all through till it runs clear, what i did was fill it up with normal water a few times, run the engine for a minute or so, drain and refil etc etc, cleans everything then
what mixture should i use when i refill the system?
What ever the coolant recomends, i used a 50/50 mix, seems to be keeping the temps down better then my 30/70 mix i used last time

I had to remove the front bumper and the radiator's plastic bit on my valver just to get the bottom hose off :( It was impossible to reach down and get a proper grip on the hose clip from the top without mangling my hands...
Damn big hands! (I think we've had this big hand convo before.)
anyhow, it still wasnt too hard.
After fitting a brand new header tank and fully flushing, my water is now a lovely green instead of the shitty brown it's been for ages
my coolant is green lol think its been changed twice this year already! 'borrowed from work' lol

What you do is take off the expansion tank, you will see there is two hoses at the bottom of it, stick a hose with running water in one of them until the water from the other hose comes out clear, then do the other hose until the water comes out clear again, then remove the bottom rad hose and drain the water from the system. Then re-attach the bottom hose. Then put the expansion tank back on with hoses and fill up the bottle, until it is between mini and maxi, remove the bleed screw on the RAD, and until the coolant comes out, you may have to add more coolant at this stage, when the flow is constant from the bleed screw hole, put the bleed screw back, being careful not to tear the rubber grommit on the screw until tight. top up the expansion tank to the mini and maxi level. Start the car with the cap off the bottle keep the revs at 1.5k and wait till the fan kicks in, your system should be cleaner and air free.
while you have the expansion tank off try and give it a good clean too, I have heard you use wheel cleaner and a flexible brush to get off the brown crap, or buy a new one from reno they are 30 odd quid.
You may have to warm the car up a bit to get out all the rust from the system, just when the oil starts to read on the oil guage is warm enough or you will scald yourself if the water/coolant is too hot.

I just stuck some bleach/water in a 50/50 mix, and a handful of pebbles in my expansion tank, shook it about for 5 mins, poured it all out and its clean as a whistle.

Gotta ask though guys you say about buying pre mixed coolant whats wrong with the old way of say a couple of pints of anti freeze then fill up with water same principle and i would say cheaper. Im only asking coz im having anew radiator fitted this saturday.
Personalyl i prefer to use the stuff you mix up, you can make it more concentrated for the mk1's that tend to run hotter than the mk2's, it is also cheaper, £15 for 5 ltrs wihich at a 1:1 mix makes 10 ltrs

It's top left of the rad (passenger side). Very easy to get to, just dont wind it too tight.

Can you get some kind of coolant flush. If i clean mine out i would like to put something through it like that to get the bits what are stuck inside.

Just finished doing this on 0062 and filled it with some MObile 1 pink coolant. Most people seem to use blue / green stuff - is this ok?

erm all i know is that your meant to use class D coolant??? thats what the sticker says on the top of my coolant header tank
hmm - in the haynes it says class C... so what is it? is the pink stuff ok?! :?

can i not take the hose off near the bleed screw instead of the bottom hose it is easyer to get at??
you need to remove the bottom hose to flush everything from the rad, but it's a bit of a bitch to get back on!
i removed the one below the bleed screw easily and then ran the hose pipe through the rad to flush everything out :)
so i have to remove the bottom hose.. so can not use the one near the bleed screw instead?
yea, you need to remove the bottom one to drain the rad
if possible remove the one near the bleed screw too and flush the rad with a hose pipe for a thorough clean 8)

this could crack the block if you flush after that with nice cold water :shock:

got rid of coma extreme green (due to being wrong coolant and i got my money back- WAS NOT GREEN) and put in gen stuff fron gsf type d got it for £12 +vat for 5L i got 2 .. reno qouted me £24+vat for 5L ..
this time i did it form bottom hose had to take bumper off THAT BOTTOM CLIP IS A T**T TO GET OFF AND ON even with bumper off

just done 2 time this week and due to the wrong gear ( got money back) and got the gen reno coolant..
and none of this mixing with water crap it is premixed.. water mix is a no no

Is it definitely luminous green Type D coolant that I want for a coolant change?
Not the Type C that is in the proper Manual (http://www.williamsclio.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=25066) or the Haynes manual, mentioned above?
I can't find it on GSF :( so prices from Renault or recommendations of where else to go would be much appreciated :)

GSF do it, in 5ltr ready mixed tubs with teh renault name on, cheaper than renault.....go to your local GSF
Personally i wouldn't use that stuff as its a rip off, buy decent concentrate from Halfords or any motor factors and dilute as required, i usually ignore the instructions and do it 50/50.....i believe this is what ChrisH recommends too

This concentrate from Halfords - are there different types?
Will getting the 'wrong' type damage anything?
I can't see why it would but different formulations and all that...
i believe there is one type that can't be used with anything else, read the bottle and you'll be fine
use the TYPE D coolant (bright green), reno changed from TYPE C as it was causing a few problems years ago iirc and it dont need to be diluted

I got some type D renault stuff from a renault contact for £10 for 5 litres i think... will be doing the coolant top swap soon..
one thing i would like to note though, coming from a BMW background where you have to seriously bleed the system with the engine running to get rid of airlocks etc... it just seems a bit bizzare that to bleed it, all you do is open the bleed screw and let it piss out until constant without the engine running..... how does that purge the whole system? surely there would be air bubbles after the thermostat? as it wont be open with it being cold?
can someone explain please?
there was a set procedure for bleeding the system on the 16v/williams, i will have a look at work tomorro if i get the chance!
but yeah 1 bleed screw on the rad lol

You have to run it up to temp with the cap off, it's a circulating system so any air left is expelled through this.

bleed it with it running, and up to temp as mentioned, as unless its up to temp the stat wont have opened and the air wont have had chance to end up in the top of the rad

Correct you NEED to use a Glycol based atnifreeze in the Renault F-Series engines as it's an anti-corrossion inhibitor which is kinda key when your coolant is circulating around an aluminium cylinder head as it doesn't cause erm... corrosion ;)
The "Type-D" is purely the temperature specification that the coolant "Mixture" or "Concentration" can protect the cooling system to. "Type-D" meaning the protection is good for -21 "degrees C" Don't mix it 50/50 either. Just buy yourself a proper mixture tester from Seleay Tools or similar for all of £8 and do it right. The Renault stuff is good but it's not cheap however it does take out the faffing about getting the mixture right.
The actual colour of the antifreeze does not in any way relate to the concentration specification so don't think that just because it's Green it's fine cos it's not and varies from brand to brand. Always check the main ingrediant is Ethelene-Glycol (EG) or Propylene-Glycol (PG) rather than a Methanol based coolant. The only difference between EG and PG is toxicity... PG isn't as harmfull if swallowed as EG but TBH you've got to be a complete retard to drink enough of the stuff and think "Hmmm, that's some tastey shizzite" to kill yourself.

ive always bled my cars running. holding the expansion tankk up really high, opening the bleed screw, whilst getting a mate to blow into the tank. works a treat
