View Full Version : Gearbox swap
Hi
I may have to swap out my gearbox for repair. Will a Ph2 172 'box be a straight swap?
I've not swapped out a box before by itself without removing engine first. Is the dropped subframe method the best bet?
The 172 box will be a direct fit as the bolt pattern is the same, the only difference you may have is the speedo drive but then saying that i use a GTT and it can read the speedo with a 172 box due to cable driven but thinking about williams and valvers are cable driven so you might be ok.
I would also say lift engine out will be alot easier than dropping it all
dropping the subframe is the best because you wont have to drain the p/s system . 172 box should fit , i found out the spedo drive on them has a torx shape fitment rather than older /square type but square cavle seems to go in fine too .

I think you need the battery tray and mount off a 172 as well, somebody will confirm I am sure.
Ive done boxes 3 ways so far as ive changed 8 boxes in my car now:
1) lift engine and box up and take it off
2) drop subframe down and take it out that way
3) take gearbox out upwards with the engine still in
2 gets my vote, 1 takes longer and 3 scratches the **** out of your engine bay

Yes thats what I did when I swapped to a 172 box, bolts straight in then, so does the extra lower gearbox mount off the 172
remove subframe and drop it out the bottom leaving the engine where it is

As mentioned you'll need a battery tray mount (from a mk2 clio or megane mk1, I have one spare) and a gearbox top mount one (must be from a mk2 clio, i have a 54 plate Clio DCi one on mine)
late phase 2 box wont have a speedo worm drive for the cable, upto 02 plate i think should be okay, but you need to check otherwise no speedo
physically any 172 or 182 box will fit as they are all 5 speed jc5 boxes, can also use laguna and megane boxes from same era :-)
as mentioned you need a mark 2 clio top mount and battery tray, but can come from anything, i have a dci one as well from a 55 plate iirc
Thanks guys. Just looking at my options before this track day and wondering if I will make it or not.
laguna box from the scrappers and a mount, £100 and half a day to fit it!
if you weren't so far away mate i'd lend a lift ;-)
