I'm after a tow car for the Williams has anyone any recomendations about a better suited to car I do about 15~20k /yr so a diesel like the fabis VRS sounds good as its heavy and loads of torque however towing isn't recomended in one by Skoda as it the fast model.

I'd like something sporty though for driving abroad as I won't take the Williams abroad from now on.

Would say pug to but only the 'HDI' models as the oldskool diesels aren't easy to improve...

Stromba, your one saving grace is that what you post is actually funny.

KS my car doesn't have one of those wierd plates on the dash like the last photo has is that additional weight some WIlliams were given? Dosn't it slow th car down and affect he value after all mine doesn't have any holes on the dash.

You've got to much time on your hands though.
I think a Seat Ibiza FR tdi or Cupa Ti to car is the one I'm aftr though seems pick of the bunch.

In all seriousness, about the best tow cars around are the older e34 BMW 5 series. On top of that they are also reasonably quick, super reliable and will tow anything up to about 3.5 ton with complete ease. Also when your not towing they are pretty good to drive.

IMO an Ibiza or Cupra are way too light to be considered as decent tow cars and they are also fwd which is not what you want when their will be so much weight on the back axle. When towing you have to consider the strength and weight of the car and very importantly the strength of the suspension. The BM can tow at speeds of up to around 85mph without swaying or feeling stressed.

Our compnay workhorse is an old 1989 525i petrol, which never lets us down and even after over 200k miles is still on the original clutch, engine and box. The ONLY car I would consider replacing it with would be a newer 525/530td Estate which will have the added bonus of the extra capacity for all your tools and spares.

The thing is I need a reliabile car living out in the sticks means a car which doesn't start is a big problem to fix, so I'm almost writing of any idea of an older car plus with my experiances with the escort and Williams old cars have cemented my idea about old car reliability.

In my experience a 10 year old BMW 5 series will be more reliable than just about any other car built in the last 5 years.

I honestly dont think a relatively lighweight Ibiza or Cupra will be a very good tow car.

I have towed 3 ton loads with ease and IMO it tows better than just about any other car if you dont include big 4x4's.

I agree a good quality 10 year old car built to a high standad ie Merc BMW Audi etc should be more reliable but I'm unlucky when it comes to cars. Plus I'd be temped by a big tdi BMW or an Motorsport M5/M3 as they are superb cars but I'd get a duff expensive one.
Any ideas as to a new car say round £12k bigish tdi engine 6 speed box very preferably (aways wanted a 6 speed box car). Sporty looking I've no mates or passengers so that not a problem.

A lot of the Diesel VWs have six-speed boxes. But then, you may as well get a Cupra then. Good choice IMO, but then I've never towed a car before! If it was my money, I'd get a 330d Touring manual (5-speed though, not six).

£3-3.5k would get you a very good E34 525td on a P or R plate and then spend the rest on your fun car and arsing around on track.

Its what a sensible person would do.

In my experience a well looked after 10 year old BM feels like a new car anyway.

And apart from that VW, Audis, Seats etc etc are seriously dull.

A sensible person well thats not me else I'd have done a lot of thing differently in life.

Anyway I need to spend the money on learning to drive not fixing an uprating the car.

Just had a look at M3's humm no must not get one need a new car cannot be doing with an older car. 20k a year is much better on a diesel. Before you say 525 forget it if I got an older car I'd want an M5/M3 or huge tdi power.

Anyway I get through front tyres ever 12k on my dci (trackins fin) so hat will a powerful RWD car be like wih big wheels.
