looking for a nice noisy slip diff which sounds like the good old escort mk 2 rally car , did see a clio on youtube which sounded the same, any ideas? Grippers seem very popular but i am a bit wary of them as a few guys have had bad luck, anybody got experience of a quaiffe diff? They can offer a full rebuild/ diff fitting service, also seen one from italy as well, thanks duders

Grippers are the most popular and supposed to be the best. Heard more negative things about quaffe tbh.

The only negative feedback ive heard is that the turn around was long but i think that was something to do with a group buy complication.

Upgrading a JC5 is always a bit of a shot in the dark though. :?

Hi, Walters. How's the turbo build going?

When you say a with a whine, do you mean like this (put the pets outside!): WHINE! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmJH84FnQa8)

That sound actually comes from straight-cut gears. I think all LSDs are either noiseless or make a grinding noise when going round tight corners.

LSD is definitely the way to go (the diff. not the drug!). The difference it makes to a car's handling is amazing.

Straight cut gears make the whine but you do get whine from changing the final drive when fitting a gripper diff. The helix angle of the meshing gears is different to std and does generate some noise. Pink rally car has this set up and lots of clunks from the diff and whine from the FD.

Will be offering Quaife and Gripp boxes very soon, should be up and running next month. Lots to do.!!

Hi Walters fitting a gripper to the cup at the moment as mentioned turn around from them was longer than promised but happy with the diff. I have fitted a quaiff to a 172 with no problems and is a great diff for use on the road, but I agree with previous posts have heard some horror stories about them. Where you based? got a feeling I know you we are a garage in TUMBLE. Cheers ANDREW.

KJ- my descriptions are not the best! the car is now running good but i want to complete everything else mechanical which is not right and then ship it over for mapping and final checks and painting, I Tried to get an induction noise by fitting 1st a simota aerofoam, no noise, 2nd a BMC CDA  still no noise! so i have given up on achieving that :? will be in touch when its ready

Evo- straight cut gears it is then! I have been offered gearboxes (dogboxes) for 3k, id say 1500 will be my max budget though and quaiffe offered to fully rebuild my williams box and fit a diff for that including vat and delivery. dont know what straight cut gears are but they sound expensive! let me know when your ready how much straight cut with diff would be

No problem I'm ready whenever you are!

Straight cut gears: If you imagine a pair of cogs in your head right now. That shape you are thinking of are straight cut. The shape make the tooth bit stronger and also reduces sdeways loads on the box. The shape also makes them whine.

Road cars use hleical cut gears purely becuse they don't make much noise. Quite often reverse gears are straight cut, hence why you get that whine when you reverse.

evo how much do you reckon it will cost for the same set up as you have? If i get a nice whine and grip that would be good enough for my needs, straight cut gears are out of my range id say, didnt i see a post somewhere that you have a sadev? Ie your noisy grippy box may come forsale? If so let me know, have you got any vids on you tube for me to hear it?

is the gearbox on a left hand drive the same as the right? Also is it dodgy buying a second hand dog box?

The boxes are the same regardless of lhd/rhd. Buying a 2nd hand dog box is no dodgier than buying a second hand anything. What use has it had, can you test it, are there receipts, do you trust the seller (e.g. are they a member of this forum  ), etc. etc.

thanks for that bud, that opens up the market a bit as i have found some very good sites like mikado racing which have group a parts very often, i then have to decide whether paypal can cover a dispute if it happens, thats another mystery sorted!

If you want noise, try my Oreca 2.5" bore, straight through exhaust system...I am not joking either.

As for diff's, my Gripper is fine stuff! It clonks a bit on slow turns, can hear it outside the car easily, makes it sound like the car is fooked to the untrained ear.

Keep us posted on this Evo, am looking to buy a Gripper diff in the near future :)

wobba the oreca is very very loud ! I have a 2 1/2 straight through now at the moment with a home made straight through back box with a 3 inch tailpiece, still not very noisy though! A turbo seems to get rid of all acoustics replacing it with more of a whoosh, going to try a devil back box this weekend to see if thats better, glad to see your diff is good and your not having any problems, i would very annoyed if i spent 1500 and the gearbox broke, think i will see if a ready built dog box with straight cut gears comes up, il give it a go and if i dont like it i can always sell it on, thanks lads for clearing that up for me
