could someone in the DEFINITE KNOW tell me if they need
some sort of gasketing (solid/liquid ) while fitting them
or is it a ally on ally contact ??

Seal them
The carriers would let oil leak into the spark plug recess if its not sealed.
Anyway a little sealer wont hurt even if im wrong.

thats what i thought :(
my newly refurbished williams head is leaking oil from inlet cam seal and
through the cam carriers and i know for sure no form of gasketting
was used while they were fitted . leaked a lot of oil on the cambelt and
all over my freshly apinted engine bay .
absolutely fckuing pissed off :evil:
That'll be the cam seals then. I used silicone sealant, but mine leaked a fair bit at that same seal....and then it just stopped. It seems the seal can settle in place by itself sometimes.

this is not just leaking from the inlet cam seal .
its also leaking from the cam carriers as well as on to
the nearest injector . i have not even taken the rocker
cover to see if there is anything in there yet .
the point is , i paid good money to get this head fully refurbished .
and this has only run for 2 minutes since refurb and pissed out
around 200ml of oil in that time

It's red stuff from Renault but its the same as banana glue.

i am in touch with the well known tuner that has carried out the
full cylinder head refurb as we speak .
so far i have been told i must have used wrong size camshaft seals
and i should replace them with 42mm ones . WTF !!!!
( I HAVE NOT FITTED ANY CAM SHAFT SEALS ,I PAID FOR THIS WORK
TO BE DONE PROFESSIONALLY )
also been told to check the torque settings on the cam carrier bolts myself
(AGAIN I WOULD NOT HAVE PAID LOADS OF MONEY FOR THIS TO
BE DONE PROFESSIONALLY IF I WERE TO CHECK THE TORQUE SETTINGS MYSELF AFTERWARDS)
i was there when the head was put together and i know %100
no sealent was used on the cam carriers . in fact i did find it very
odd and asked there and then if sealent was meant to be used or not
the answer was "NO"

Sealer is not required on the carriers. Fact.
I said check the carriers are torqued up correctly to save you coming over to me.
It's not hard. I'm not saying I havnt torqued them I'm saying it needs checking.
If you aren't able to do it, of course bring it to me.
Please don't make out I've said "do it yourself" as that is obviously what I meant.
Once it's confirmed they are torqued, then it's fair to say its likely the carriers you brought down aren't the original ones for that head.
as stan said shouldnt need any sealer for the cam carriers, mine dont have any and has never leaked (touchwood!)

i have not got a torque wrench to start with ,plus if i was feeling
capable enough to use one i would carry out the whole work myself .
the head leaks oil so bad even on idle ,how do you expect me to
drive it all the way to your workshop ?? 40 miles at least !!
the carriers came with the head ,i have no reason to believe they are
not the original ones . are you telling me there is no way of checking
if they match the head or not ???
No there's no way of telling if they are the original ones.
Get a cheap torque wrench. Its a must have dude.

14+ year old ally head........................likley to still seal without sealant? not worth the risk imo, easy to slap a thin film in rather than not :D
out of interest where did you buy the head? i sold a williams head a 2 or 3 years ago to a guy who owned a renault 5 (i had bought the williams head from this forum, but cant remember who it was) about a year after selling it he got in contact and told me that the carriers were incorrect becasue it was leaking oil, i dont re-call talking to him much after that.
isit possible you have ended up with the same head?
