View Full Version : new g/b problem
my gearbox has totally lost it now :D
it was always spitting out of 2nd gear when cold since i bought the
19 16v 7 years ago never caused me trouble .
but recently i found out i can select reverse gear without pulling the
reverse selector lever  not very funny when it happens
before you are about to take of from lights with cars behind you .
reverse gear selector does still work . basicly i can select reverse
with or without using the lever .
other than that the box works smooth as with no problems .
any ideas what might be causing this ??

linkage prob needs resetting
Just get a linkage that's never been messed with and replace the little gaitor if its worn
Check engine mounts as well, may be worn or in the wrong place.
there is nothing to reset at the gear linkage .
it mates and locates the 2 in 1 place .
iirc , when you pull the reverse lever up the linkage pulls
the arm at gearbox end down so that you can go in reverse .
may be something is causing the arm to permanently stay down ?
will check over the weekend me thinks .

the lift up reverse thing is just so it goes over a block on the gear stick housing, nothing to do with the box end.

It just moves the linkage part of the selector down on the box to get reverse gear

yes, as justin says, it is very easy to understand how the reverse part works, but there is a steel cable going to somewhere which cannot be seen..

That's just part of the sleeve return mechanism I believe. Aftermarket shortshifters don't use this method, they just have a spring.

yes, as justin says, it is very easy to understand how the reverse part works, there is a steel cable going to the lower sleeve which can be seen in this picture

It's a Clio Mk1 gearstick (rubber ring, lower gearstick gaitor, rubber ball joint housing is not shown in this pic). Although your gearstick may be different (there is a minor different between the various Renault models) but the reverse-lock mechanism is the same in super R5, Clio Mk1 and Mk2, R19 etc.
It sounds me linkage or reverse-lock mechanism problem. First, as Matty86 wrote: lift up the gearstick gaitor and check the movement of the reverse-lock sleeve/slider. Check it from beneath too.
