ITB's are a hot topic right now but something ive always wondered...

Whats the deal with running ITB's without filters? On a track of course but surely with forward facing trumpets the risk of ingesting something is going to be pretty big plus just general grit and sand getting in messing up your precious as presumably highly tuned engine. But it kinda also seems pointless running them with big filters as it saps a load of strength. What do most people do? How high are the risks for open ended raw power?

Im guessing oil changes would be more frequent and would get rid of excess dirt but surely with the lengths builders go to to keep the internals clean it still can't be good over time.

If you were to run both(filters for road) then would the engine be mapped with filters on or off?

I personally dont see the point in running no filter, even if you seen a 10bhp gain.
The fact that valves and valve seats will wear a hell of a lot quicker means that in a relatively short space of time power is going to tail off anyway...so that 10bhp "gain" could easily result in a 20bhp loss after 6 months.

why would you want to risk it, excessive wear as stan said plus the chance something with get in and destroy the engine, great way to waste money imho

i would be constantly pooing myself at the thought of a stone flying in. Ive seen what broken valves do to heads and pistons so yes i agree why would you risk it?

What is the point of nice shiney trumpets then?? Is that all for show? 8)

I always had the filter on, I still managed to suck in foreign objects and obliterate my engine :D

trumpets are required on itbs to restore the torq lossed due to the short inlet tract. on a clio or r5 in my case the bigger the better aS there is limited space. i ran without filters for years and no probs but the rings will wear faster and valves. a good pannel filter will loose no performance to worry about (maybe 1hp) so my next set up will have the trumpets coming through the grill with a pannel filter outside
