Can you get them?

I've just obliterated my second (1 month old) clutch into about 70 million pieces on the ring road, and dont fancy forking out £110 every month for a new one.

Paddle clutch are no good for a road car. I know you wouldnt understand this as your car has never moved, but im sure it looks shiny in its garage with its expensive clutch.

so you wouldn't know.. :D

it's same as 172, with a different release bearing. Helix organic is about £320 of paddle is about £380 IIRC

Some are quite nice, and some (depending on the clamp force of the cover usually) can be quite snappy. Paddle clutches will always have a shorter life than an organic clutch though. I'd only go for a paddle is you actually need it

See Laine, this is what you get for trying to launch in 3rd at 9000rpm, whilst trying to "do" a corsa LET off the lights!!!

The Helix paddles are sprung, so they dont bite harshly like older type paddles, they feel no more harsh than a standard clutch.

They wear quicker though, alot quicker, especially with your chavvy driving Elaine.

can a organic clutch handle the torque when you use turbo.??

stan
08-07-2009, 07:27
Depends on the diaphram/cover I guess.

I'd go for a paddle...
I think the helix ones are good for about 300lb.ft CONTINIOUS loading.

Evogone
08-07-2009, 08:59
I have a Helix paddle in the rally car and its fine on the road. It must have had a couple of hundred standing start (start of a stage) and when the box was last out it wasnt even half worn... :D

Yeah im talking about when fitted to engines making decent torque/power, not std-ish ones.

Laine_16v
08-07-2009, 11:06
I wasnt launchihng at 9000rpm lmfao!

I was at full throttle yes, changing from 2nd to 3rd (not full throttle gear changing though). And it just went bang and sounded like a million bolts fell of the bottom of my car onto the road, im about to go and take it apart now :(

Evogone
08-07-2009, 12:21
Yeah im talking about when fitted to engines making decent torque/power, not std-ish ones.

Slicks and LSD with hundreds of full bore standing starts put far more strain on the clutch so can not compare to an equivelant road car.

Either way its lasted really well and would recommend one for pootling round town too.

8" Slicks, LSD, Dog-box, 230-odd-bhp=less than one season (probably 5 or 6 events).

8" Slicks, LSD, Dog-box, 230-odd-bhp=less than one season (probably 5 or 6 events).

Wouldnt be happy with that, i would send it back to Helix. Dogbox should help longegevity a bit as there is less chance off clutch slip (riding the clutch) between gears.

All the people i know in fwd rallycars clutches last at least 2 season before a new plate is used even cars with way more hp and wider tyres and rwd so more load from a start.!!

Ouch, put me off too much hp...car would be in bits after every event..!

How many FWD rally cars do you compete against with 230+bhp, 8" slicks?

And comparing it to other rwd cars isnt necessarily fair, they often have larger diameter clutches.

There are quite a few (Will Onions and Guy Woodcock in Escort F2 Maxis for example) and loads of S1600 200 hp plus cars..... all 200mm clutches so smaller than Megan 215mm.

Regards class winning car then 2nd in class is not far off....but hey not bad when competing in a far lower spec car...

I agree Spongenob but its so much fun when the car that beats you by a couple of seconds cost 40k....

Now if i spent £xxk on 230hp / Sadev and the likes and didnt win the class then i would be in tears......

Dont see how whether its a 3min sprint or a 30min outing alters the ammount of driver "effort"?

Just cos its a sprint, doesnt mean he's going to try less hard?

To quantify that the sprint cars do far less milage than rally cars and the surface is usually ultra smooth, plus how hard you drive the car is not proportional to how quick the car is...
