Manual racks you can pick up off people here or 16valver etc.
Track rods complete with ends, locking washer etc http://www.eurocarparts.com/
£36.46 +VAT
Personally I would do both sides at same time to balance the steering.

Other side rod is super stiff and and had a new rod end last month.
Where can i get a new williams manual rack ? are the racks just the same as the 1.2 or something ?
yeah they are just the manual racks off the lower model clio's, you might need a coloum as well, also the brackets so your belt can be relocated too.
never done it but there have been plenty of posts on how

I have all parts to do this conversion - PM ifinterested.
I thought the cup racks were less turns lock to lock??

Its already got a manual rack, just wondered whether it was just a manual Williams rack ? If so where can i get a new one from ?
the "cup" manual "quick rack" is just a 1.2/1.4 item. Ive got both, they are the same.

do they have the same ratio for number of locks?
yup
4.2iirc, can check tommorow if your particularly intrested
Williams PAS rack has LEAST turns lock to lock...but they are quite heavy with wide slicks on.
if you could that would be handy

Was the Williams sold without PAS at first ? If so which rack did it use ?
not iirc it and the 16valves all had power steering
is it worth going manual for a fast road/track situation? does the pas slow the engine down = reducing the power, how much does it weigh? or is it just for the feel?
sorry for O/T
thanks jamie

^^^Personally I'd say yes, when my PAS broke, my car felt fookin lovely to drive fast :D
Was only a bit awkward when parking etc but who really gives a flying fcuk about that  the cars made for raggin about
I suppose it does sap a bit of power to drive the PAS pump, and you'd definately shed a few kg's from losin the pump, pipework & fluid, although I'm not sure if a manual rack weighs any more or less than a powered one :?

PAS is probably just to make it easier to park - it is quite 'heavy' power steering when you're up to speed, compared to newer cars!
You can run the rack but with the lubricant sealed in and therefore no PAS I believe - might save a couple of bhp as you're powering the pump - and you'll barely notice it until you're parking :)
all the works car ran power steering..
i would hate to drive mine without..
make hand brake turns a night mare.. :D
So is the cup racer quick rack a myth.....!??
Yes :D
I'll measure mine sometime soon..been rather busy lately.
i hated mine when the pas pump packed up!
gave me sore arms! :(

can I resurrect this thread quickly.
Has anyone ever heard of an engineering company who will modify a manual rack to make it quicker lock to lock?

Group A
not sure on all the spec..
plus never seen magnesium alloys on cup cars but works cars might have had them...but loads of rumours..
p.s. what you building and would the works part catalouges help
Cup racer rack is a 1.2/1.4 rack and 56 quid at GSF.
Maxi
Remember the Gp "A" racks and parts are mainly LHD !!!
The plot thickens...
Just measrued the rack I obtained as "a mk1 clio cup rack". This gives 4.5 turns lock to lock. This was found to be the same as a 1.2/1.4.
Ive also just measured my Cup car...thats 3.5 lock to lock
So looks like there IS a RS item
Also just checked a valver, thats about 2.8.
Anyone got a williams nearby to check? Im sure they are like 2.5.

I didnt realise the difference was that big
My car will end up a turbo hybrid (probably not F7R though  ), but i do want to run a manual rack
It sounds like the 1.2 1.4 rack is going to feel really really wooley with that many turns on it.
Shame, think i'll have to just deal with it :(
as for the magnesium alloys, trying to get some pics off the guy as we speak / get a weight from him.
Although he himself says he's not sure if they are any different.
Don't worry guys, I'll let you know :D

Just noticed you said that mate. It might help, I'd certianlly enjoy a look. Are any of the parts still available?

the "magnesium" cup wheels are the same weight as the std clio wheels.

so what's the point then? why did anyone bother making then magnesium alloy? It bends easier iirc?

dont mean to sound like a sap
but do we know all these cars have the same turning
circle in full lock ?
i.e : same amount of degrees of wheel turn on full lock ?
no, thats kinda irralavent though as its going to depend on KPI and camber mainly...
Rack ratio is what we are looking at when talking about "quick racks", and this determins the number of turns lock-to-lock.
so what's the point then? why did anyone bother making then magnesium alloy? It bends easier iirc?
How do you know the are magnesium?
i think a 19 does 3.5 turns :?:

I don't :(
But if i manage to get my grubby mits on them and they look like willy wheels and are sub 7kgs, I'm gonna be chuffed :D
Must admit im doubtfull.
they are 7kg, same as williams rims.
Trust me, ive weighed them.
had a look at both the rack off my 16v and off the williams and one is 3turns, the other 2 and 3/4 ish
both pas racks btw
had a more accurate look and would say there both about 2.8 turns lock to lock.
hmmm im 99.9999% certain the williams ones I have measured are less than valver.
 this is where we find out renault being renault actually have 17 different PAS racks for the 16v range!
tbh i cant say 100% if its defiantly a williams rack, it came off my williams and does have slightly different bracket for the pipes but never know if it was ever swapped before i got it lol
