Always a good idea to back up your back up
Data recovery from failed HD's is an easy thing to do now - doesnt cost much either at all when using so called experts.
Are ou connecting the HD to a laptop via USB which is also used to power the HD? sometime lack of USB power can cause HD's in caddys to play up a bit IME.

 you have a habit of destroying things when they begin to annoy you *burning Mk1 Leather seats incident anyone* :P
is it a 2.5inch laptop HD? inside a caddy? could be the caddy at fault rather than the HD? Prior to bashing of course lol.
