Hi all!

One thing has been on my mind ever since buying the Williams - sequential gearchanges!   (probably because my daily car is a Citroen C4 with EGS gearbox). But after reading several topics on here I realised that it would be just pointless spending 5-8k on that, unless you're loaded.

Then it dawned on me - what about motorbikes? I know that they have clutches as well, but the gear changes are very much like the sequential boxes, aren't they? There's plenty of VWs out there with bike conversions, and they are wild! (check out youtube)  So what if I was to convert mine to a bike engine and gearbox - would that be closer to what I'm after? Anybody done that or knows anyone who has? What am I looking at $$$-wise?

Would be great to hear your ideas!!

TBH, if you have to ask how to do it, then you dont stand a chance of DIY.
It would take a bit of innitiative and skill to complete.

If you were to pay to do it, it would cost ALOT.

In short, The rear would need space framing, idependent wishbone suspension fabricated, driveline set-up. and then plumb engine, electronices etcvetc etc

IMO I would only consider it if you could get the weight down to say 600kg. Even then, I would look at a turbocharged unit.

You only have to look at the price of Z cars hayabusa minis on pistonheads to see how much it costs, the price of them is unreal!!

Still,It would be a very cool thing to do tho mate 8) 8)

stan, I'm definitely not thinking about doing this by myself. that's a job for professional.

also, i wouldn't want to have the engine on the back. what for? Just stick in in the front instead for the existing one. that should make it much easier, right?!

wouldnt make it much easier no, would save you having to fabricate wishbones/pickups etc.

traction would be an issue if its was FWD I reckon, as instead of 150-175kg over the front wheels, you'd have 40-50kg!

OK, i see

Is it possible at all to use just the gearbox on its own? mate it to the original engine somehow?

no..torque will kill it i think

1 big problem is no reverse gear on motorbike gearbox, so sorting that out would cost big money. also i dont think the gearbox would last well considering the fact that a clio is just shy of 1000kg and a bike is 200kg thats a fair bit more stress.

Zcars make gearboxs that have reverse...maybe you could buy one of them and do the engine etc yourself/elsewhere.

Well, with the bike engine in the front the weight distribution would be sorted though. 50/50 more like...

Plus if you completely strip out the car I'm sure you could get the weight down quite a lot, which would help the engine.

It would have hell of a wheel spin though!!

under acceleration, weight distribution favours RWD for traction....not FWD....especially not when the only weight over the front is 50kg.

i.e even though the engine is in the rear and still only 50kg, under acceleration, the weight ditribution shifts massively to the rear...aiding traction. The same weight shift for a FWD 50kg engine would mean big traction issues, as the weight shifts rear-wards.

It looks like the price of installing a decent bike setup would be just as much as installing a sequential gearbox. oh well...

maybe i should just rip out the EGS gearbox out of my citroen C4 and try ti stick it in the clio

Flan

Or just fit a turbo lump and learn to change gear quicker. ;)

u33db

or just buy a bike and go properly quick... ;)
