View Full Version : 172 brakes + driveshaft popped out
right i bought some 172 brakes off crossers the other week, fitted them and bled them, and all was good, ive noticed that with the 172 hubs, the track is slightly wider, took it out for a spin to check all was ok, came to a corner of my private test track which has a slight rise/camber, as the car went over it while turning the n/s driveshaft popped out of the gearbox. im thinking the shafts are a tad too short now?? or do they tend to pop shafts often?
think the shaft only wants to be a tiny bit longer i recon and i have a few n/s shafts i could butcher to make a longer one but im not sure how much longer it'd need to be
would 172 shafts fit?
how much longer are williams shafts or 19 16v shafts?
any more ideas anyone??
i *think* one of the R19 16v shafts is longer... i thought it was the O/S though
ill look into that
im not sure how much longer i need the shaft to be yet as it may have been a one off thing that it popped out, not drove it since
could do with crossers replying see if it happened to him much
damn edit button,
at a guess id say it was the n/s one that was longer on a 19 as the engine bay is bigger but the top engine mount is the same as a clio iirc
anyone else, any ideas?

nar its deffo the shaft, going to have it apart in the moring to have a look, might have broke the shaft tbh.
if it was the diff circlip wouldnt i lose drive?
yes you would...
deffo not the circlip then as i popped the shaft back in reversed off my drive and i came out again, im thinking ive broke the end of the driveshaft now. it did go with quite a bang with it went.
would the 172 hubs mean id need longer shafts?
im noww thinking it wouldnt :?
as far as i remember you need clio inner shafts with the larger 1 7 2 outer joints fitted..iirc

so valver shafts, 172 CV's?
valver shafts and inner cv,s and 1 7 2 outer cv's iirc...
right got a few spare shafts so ill get hold of some 17.2 cvs and make some "hybrid" shafts up see if that sorts it. ill let you know how it goes
cheers maxi
sure thats what was done before mate..best of luck... :D
:?
a guy on CS has just told me 172 outer cv's are fixed to the shafts and cant be removed??? surly this cant be true?
wtf? :(
tis true. all one peice
125 each plus vat from renault
cant justify that if im going to butcher them for the cvs
ill try some scrappys
maybe sold as one piece but i bet there removable...try beanie..

off to a breakers in doncaster tomorrow as theyve got a 17poo in atm
all it needs is a slightly longer shaft by the looks of it, im thinking a williams shaft might sort it
I got no problems with my 172 brakes, I'm driving a R19 16v though, they have a wider track... You can use those shafts to I think...
ita gonna knock your camber all over mr teabag. if i was you i'd widetrack it and have done!

camber seems ok tbh think its because its fited with williams shocks
and its not the wide track that im after its the bigger brakes
ive got a n/s 172 shaft im gunna fit today think that should sort the popping out

how much longer is a n/s R19 shaft compared to a valver n/s shaft?
if you had wiliams shocks on then i'd say your camber would be stupidly positive!
i know your not after widetrack but you would not regret doing it and then everything would match up too instead on havin godd driveshafts! (i know they are odd as std but they are matched as a pair).

yea i know what u mean...one 17.2 shaft and one valver shaft
think ill have to dip my hand in my pocket again soon then lol
would camber correcting bolts sort it in the mean time?
i'll be honest i doubt it.
grrrrr bloody renault
cant get the cv off the 172 shaft looks like its a solid peice at the end instead of splines and a circlip like on a valver cv
2 options now.....
go back to valver brakes which i dont want to do
or
try a 19 16v shaft or a willy one.
how much longer is the 19 16v shaft compared to a clio valver one?
looool!!
R19 shaft should do it.
