New brush/regulator assy cost me about £7 last year but when I stripped the alternator the slip rings were very badly worn. Fitted new assy but it only lasted about 5,000 miles before I had to replace the alternator, about £75 exchange. Worth a try though even though it's a bit of a pain to change the alternator.

I think I was meaning that if you're spending £40 on refurbishing the one you've got, you may as well just spend a little bit extra and buy new!
And yes, point taken on the secondhand issue
best new i could find was double what i paid for my refurb :(
the regulator was tested on a jig and comes with a warranty. they also did it then and there, which was nice! didn't fancy running without an alternator :D
