View Full Version : Why it went Bang!!!!!!!!
As some of you already know from watching a few of my vids etc that the hybrid died a week on friday ago, after stripping the motor down i'm prety sure i found the cause but i'd like some of your opinions.
This is the vid where it went bang

Ahh that be not good - not the cam belt then
nice!
Fair shifting though mate when it was running.....shame. Did u get in touch with smokey ?
i got mself an engine mate just gonna repair a few valves then put my head on it it'll be running before croft
Good lad. Not looking forward to crofty....too open and fast for my little old 1.8! Going to get spanked.
you won't do too bad, i was keeping up with cossies with a 1.8 in round croft, you carry alot of speed into corners at croft, i'm still tempted to take the V6, its great at croft

Honestly I have seen some many engines which have been rebuilt blow up its silly now. These range from have cracked pistons, snapped rods, spun bearings and all sorts. its just silly. Got a picture of the conrod aswell?

Has the block been scraped as I'm on the look out for a crank?

whats with all the gashes at the top of the piston? it looks to me like the top of the piston has hit a valve somewhere along the line....
would it be possible for a valve to 'drop' if you know what i mean? into the cylinder and it all goes tits up!?
just a poorly educated guess!
it hit the valves when the piston snapped lol

i doubt it, seeing as if you were to piece the pistom together, you will see that one of the deep scores or 'gashes' goes across both sides of where it has split, in which case the valve hit it whilst it was still intact
oh sorry i', looking at the wrong marks, the indentations are already in the pistons like that from the factory, presume needed it for a little valve clearance
depending on where the piston broke it has twisted slightly in the bore hence why it has extra grooves when the valves have been driven into the piston

oh ok i just presumed they were smooth...that explains that then!

what mileage was she on?
aboutt 4k if he's lucky! rebuilt jobby
yeah about that, TBH the engine was a joner (or how ever u spell it) its never been right since it was in pieces
So is the crank okay and if so is it forsale?
Mick
it is ok but i'm planning on keeping it as a spare for now

unlucky mate, thats why i wont take mine round the track i just know its gonna go wrong!
and i'm trying to spend money on restoring my williams, rather than mending it, which seems to be all im doing at the moment, its already needed the diff rebuilt, driveshaft and exhaust and i've only had it 3 months!
what are you going to do now get another f7r engine? what about a 172/182 engine is it stronger?
i've got another engine, its all part of the fun with renaults, i don't think its the trackdays that destroys it, i think its just he way i drive it on a trackday

Difficult to see from teh vid properly but the pressure looked a little low to me. Wasn't moving much when you were accelerating.
It amazes me thoug how slow people go round Cadwell, esp. in the wet. We were lapping all sorts last time we were there in the old 1.8. Was even lapping with an Exige once the track had started drying out.
