i smell a search function mate

nah seriously been so many threads on this its silly and its all down to personal taste in terms of ratios etc

heard that diesel boxes are good for long ratios, top end and that. some of the lower model petrol ones maybe have shorted gears for sprinting. and also possbile to fit most newer boxes of clio 172's meganes, kangoos etc with a few mods and they tend to be stronger, altho not sure on ratios

I have a 172 cup box in mine and its by far the best box I've had in any Mk1 clio I've driven (and I've driven a lot of Mk1's, lol). Feels really tight when changing gear and I've not had any issues with it yet.

What are the ratios like compared to standard?

RPM at 70mph? a ton? :)

I'd be interested to here more about this :D

I couldn't tell you exactly what the revs are at different speeds off the top of my head but will go out for a drive later on and let you know. From my experiences I haven't noticed any major difference in the ratios but although I have driven a lot of valvers I've never driven one other than the hybrid for a prolonged period of time so can't give an accurate comparison on how the ratios feel for driving.

JB1.

Cheap, better ratios and as good if not better than std valver boxes.

Not sure tbh as mine had it when I bought it. I would imagine they could be picked up for a reasonably price now.

I'm looking to replace my valver box in the hybrid as soon as money allows - & i can be arsed ripping the engine out!

What work is involved in fitting a 172 box? I'm assuming the mounts don't line up correctly? Also, i'm sure i read on here that it needs to be a 172 cup box, as it has a mechanical speedo drive, as opposed to the normal 172 which is electrical - correct???

What is the JB1 box fitted to? & is it strong enough to take a cammed willy lump? Also, how do the ratios differ?

Thanks guys,

Al

As far as I am aware you really want a cup gearbox because as you say they are the only ones that have mechanical speedo drives. There may be a way around this with other boxes but I am not aware of it.

With regards the mount I was told that mine is running a custom engine mount of some sort to run the 172cup box but tbh I haven't had the battery out to have a proper look at it.

Would definitely be interested to know how they fit - possible future mod.

Anyone else know anything about these JB1 boxes?
