I have still not sussed why the car overheated, causing the head gasket to blow on my car. It could just be becuase it's never been changed and was old, or it was botched last time with just gasket filler or something.
BUT I did think originally it could be water pump failure. With the expansion cap off I could see the water getting hot very quckly as it would steam from he cap, surely if the pump was broken it would circulate to the expansion tank so fast? I could hear no strange noises (like you get with messed up water pump bearings etc).
I was thinking it could have had an air lock as it leaked a fair bit before I topped it up, plus the system was in need of a serious flush. The system was badly fouled with old coolant and rust deposits, now sorted.
I don't wasnt to have to go through all this only for it to happen again, and I don't want to fork out yet more money on a pump if I dont need one!
Prognosis anyone?
