View Full Version : how can you tell ?
The difference between a 16v engine and a williams ?
Ibought what i thought was a 16v but im not sure about the engine , the limiter is very low and its rollin roaded at 155bhp with filter and scorpion full system!
seem strange to anyone else?
the torque lower down is always a giveaway, of you get a kick at about 4-4.5k revs its a valver engine but if you get it form 2-2.5 its a williams engine or a heavily modified valver engine!

Nick Hill will be able to tell you.
silver tag, front of block, near the gearbox, F7P/R...will tell you

Also oil dip stick is a different colour.
white dipstick = williams
What do you class as low ....6500rpm - williams
What colour is a valver dipstick??
mines yellow with a blue blob on top
You could whip the ECU out and write down all the markings... Im sure Nick Hill would be able to tell you whether its a Williams ECU or Valver ECU from your findings.

I've got a yellow dipstick with a blue spot
The dipstick is yellow with a white blob, on a 92 plate , and if i had to say ( 95 % sure) then yes 6500 sounds about right ! hope this is not just my wishfull thinking lol will have another look for plate , got to find out for sure as its doing my nut in .
Limiter is exactly 6500
im thinking this was more of a bargain than i first thought :D
neme! why dont you ask the bloke you bought it off??? also what does the logbook say it is???? 1.8 or 2.0????
The bloke i bought it off only had it for 3 months , driving to portsmouth every week in the clio proved to much for him . The log book says 1.8 and it was sold as 1.8 so i assummed it was that. however after posting pics of the engine bay people comments made me look in to it and...
willy dipstick (hardly concrete i know)
155bhp from system and filter
6.5k limiter
pulls from the word go (no 16v 4k powerband)
full willy interior and badging ( thinking who ever did this may well of went whole hog)
so im pretty sure its a willy engine , although still looking for this mythical engine number lol
well buddy! as soon as you find out for sure make sure you let us know asap! youve got a steal there if it does turn out to be a 2 litre!
Looks like you found an absolute bargain :D
do a 0-100 run if you come in under 18secs on the clocks I'd say you've got a f7R

Check the size of the starter motor and look for strengthening veins on the block.
Mat.
Get some pictures up, this is interesting!!!

If the limiter kicks in at 6600, that is proof enough. I mean why would a valver engine have its limiter taken down to 6600?
On another note, just goes how hard it is for an insurance company to show you had a 2.0 ltr engine in a car insured as a 1.8 :D
i wonder if its willy tracked aswell ?
might even be a willy as standard? lol, check the chassis number, if its "C57M" its a williams, if its "C57D" it's a valver.
Had a quick check of chassis no its c57d so it was def a valver to start with ..........
what gears do the limiters cut in at - 3rd - 83mph and 4th 110 ????
