well yesterday on way to work in the rain "1 mile ish" funy noise and oil light came on, pulled over and oil was pissing out from above the filter.
got the car back to work, changed filter and put new oil in, ran fine but tappety so changed to a thicker oil and all was fine until tonight when i started the car "cold and stood for 9 hours" when splosh wizz pisss dribble it did the same again!!!!!!
just how tight do these filters need to be?
tighten till contact then a further 3/4 of a turn or so, that fact you are running thicker oil dont' help one bit, will give you a high oil pressure when cold, use a 5W40, and the tappets shoudl get better after a while
hand tight should be enough mate
When you say blew the seal you mean it blew the rubber washer around the filter out?
Check you don't have 2 rubber seals on there by accident.
My dads car had one from an old filter bonded to the block from age and burst as you said

where is the crankcase breather, would it come out the dip stick if this was blocked?
so u say hand tight then 3/4 turn more, and 5w - 40 oil yeh?
could anything be the cause of this?
Only thing i can think of is not tightening the filter atall or as above having two seals on there

only the one seal on and yes just pushed the seal out enough to leek the oil.

It's written on the oil filters.

think I posted about this yesterday but thats exactly what happened in my xr2, no reason I could find at all, just blew the rubber sealer ring out the side
took it off and cleaned it up, refitted and it was fine forever after

well its going into the garage at half two to have it changed again, new filter and 5w 40 oil, should do the trick.
fingers crossed!

Yeah tighten till contacta and then 3/4 of a turn further to tighten it up, i always do mine up by hand and un do them by hand, never even owned an oil filter wrench :P
check the mating surfaces are clean and run your finger with a small trace of oil over the seal, im told this helps seal it better but dnt ask me why!! tighten 3/4 of a turn, oh and i hope your using a genuine filter, my hybrid kept getting airlocks with a fram filter, which was kinda worrying in the mornings..

Love the FRAM filters, got the little nut on the top lol
Think the oil helps stop it sticking so you can undo it easier
they have nuts on the top? not the ph5911 its too big as well, i just use the genuine filter, its only about £2 more and is smaller so getting it in and out are made, just slightly... Easier lol

PH5354....not cheap though, best part of a tenner
