Ok,
Im unlucky my hybrid has broken in under 24 hours of ownership in a nasty way.
My engine gently let go this morning, having a quick blast with Gaz on the way to trax, pull up to a junction on the main road and the car feels lumpy....its running on 3 cylinders.
Much head scratching later we cant sort it, the injector is firing (the RAC confirmed it with a little light bulb thin), and there is a spark, all dizzy and rotor checked.
He then revved it, at 3000rpm the engine gives off a slight clattering its not loud but it is there.
Ive chatted to many people about it so its time to place your bets before the engine is cracked apart.
Cliolord - Piston slap, BE failure
Nyk - Failed follower
Ron - dropped valve
Craig - piston/valve damage
Midge - Headgasket
BANZAI!

hope it nothing major. but piston damaged sounds right.
 sorry to hear about this mate. i was speaking to cliolord earlier and when he told me low compression on cylinder 3 and piston slap i said headgasket so im gonna stick with that, if its worst case and turns out to be bottom end then get hold of a low milage 2.0 meg bottomend and use that ( then get cliolord to sort it for free as his such a nice lad  )

If you are not losing power, and the lumpiness goes away when you rev it. It might not be anything too serious. I 'd guess it's a head/valve related issue from the clattering.

I am losing power lol, its painfully shite to drive like it is!

My bet is on the headgasket.

spun a bearing.
seriously may well be a head gasket.. if i could hear or drive it i would diagnose it properly/.

Laine,
Get a vid+sound recording done.
Bonnet Up + RPM Visible on the camera..
Might give the ones in the know a better understanding of problem.

Ok here are some vids.
Can i stress the camera makes the engine sound dreadful!!
Its really not bad at all, the engine when revved actually sounds healthy apart from it missing on a cylinder, theres no nocking, rattling e.t.c anymore
If you listen to the starter motor you can hear it speed up every cycle, i think this is down to compression loss in 1 cylinder and thats whats cuasing it.
a dropped valve...? Defo compression.

Also some of the more observant among you might notice one of the injector plugs is off.
It made no difference if it was on or off, still ran the same, so removed to save petrol!
YEs there is signal at the plug.

Big end damage
Can i ask you what makes you think that?
I wouldnt say its bearing damage...e.g big ends. 1) would be noisey as hell or 2) wouldnt run.
Thats a definate misfire from lock of compression. I would remove cam cover to check cam condition/operation. If the cam is fine, I would say valve damage...
erm, call me silly but it ran like this before aaron fixed it, the piper pullies had slipped to max retard or whatever and it ran like shite, its possible they have slipped again?
hmmm...... iasked this also on clio 16valver. be my first port of call
I'd say its your tyre - sounds underinflated
Okay I have no idea - sorry

Pulleys wouldnt cause these symptoms.
Nevermind looks like its being shipped off to APD for inspection and repair.
whip the cam cover off for a nosey 1st mate to be sure, its worth a look see

Yup will do that tommorow :)
if the cam timing slipped...yes it would run like shit. It wouldnt drop the compression on one cylinder though....
surely AA man wud of checked compression tho to confirm? he did when mine went, i told him H/G death, n he checked comp to confirm?

Lol nope didnt do a compression check, did spark and injector and revved it, was like "Bottom end is ****ed"
 That screeching/rubbing noise at the end of the third video don't sound good at all.

There isnt any, its just wind noise or genereal noise because the phone recording it is crap
Whew! Glad to know that. That noise would give me nightmares, if it happened to my car.
Hope you sort out the car cheap.

Just taken the rocker cover off, everything underneath looks spot on, you can tell its been rebuilt at some point in its life its cleaner than a lot of them i have seen.
THe pulleys look fine but i cant tell if they have slipped because i need to look from the other side but getting the side cam cover off is a mare.
So not exploded cam's or pulleys :P

HGF
Cylinders 1 & 2 = 60 Psi
Cylinders 3 + 4 = 150 and 170 Psi
