as i have another project in the form of a supermoto i need some pointers, so if anyone is into bikes get in touch please.

been told i need to nickel plate the cylinder head, instead of just honing it??? as the rings can go against the bare steel?

it'll be the barrel, not the head. costs about £120...i'll dig out the number of the place I use, they are based in gloucester area..you might find them through google.

what bike/engine is it??

Get a KTM 450 like me

And as stan said, its the barrel, not the head.

ye it is the barrel, the rings are welded to the piston and scored the barrel. i paid minimal money for it so wana get it sorted as its meant to be rapid on road.

a good machine shop will be able to knock up a liner and press it into the barrel. you'll need to get different rings tho, as ones meant for nikasil coating are treated differently.

it works out cheaper to get your barrel replated...trust me, ive been ****ing about with bikes since a was a kid!

TBH, if i was you, i'd look at finding an RM250 motocross engine as a whole replacement. it'll work out cheaper/better/quicker. The road variants such as RMX are less powerful, and have longer gear ratios.

Or if your feeling adventurous, fit a big thumper lump! 2 strokes lack the low down grunt for SM.

yes, as I said above, the road versions of MX bikes are less powerful.

how old is the bike?

you'll defo get one on the cheap. keep an eye on ebay...

I'd defo consider a large 4 stroke as a replacement...

what do you suggest as theres an rm engine ive got my eye on and finishes soon?

well depends on your budget and how much u **** about. A 4 stroke will likely need mounting points altering...not difficult, but depends on your own abilities really.

Look for maybe a DRZ 400 unit.

To be fair, you could make pretty much any single cyl thumper lump fit with relative ease.
