I was wondering today what the first ever engine to have a cambelt was. Does anyone know?

I had been thinking things like Ford Pintos, late 70's / early 80's BMW's, but I just dont know who first came out with them and its bugging me.

Just done a google search and apparently it was invented by a Monsieur Cambelt in 1923. The original design was used to help chickens ovulate but slowly rotating an electric fan to cool the birds at one end of the belt and at the other end to turn an electric motor to tickle drinking water towards their delicate beaks.

:D

Wouldn't like to comment on the chicken theory, but this is a conflicting view....

The first use of a cambelt was in 1945, and the first use on mass produced car was on the German built Goggomobile (like a microcar), in 1950. Vauxhall and Fiat were the first to copy.

Not sure what models they copied with though....still looking :? :? :?

I think it was the Vauxhall Vulva and the Fiat Felatio

As far back as that. I wonder how strong they were back in those days?
