View Full Version : Best Turbo To Use?

For a turbo conversion.

If I were running low compression, high boost....

Theres a few to choose from. My brother has just bought a t25 Garrett for his R5 GTT....he says this would be a good option. Are there any benefits to having a T28 instead?

Which is the one I should go for?

Thanks

Mike

depends on power you want. think T28 is first choice then T3

well as your going low comp high boost id go for the Garrett GT28RS

Well im sure the low comp/hi boost and hi comp/low boost discussion has been going on for a long time.

I assumed that lower compression was a "lower risk" system to run with less chance of detonation.
Im just trying to make my mind up which road to go down if i decide to turbo it (which i 95% have decided to do it).

Im gonna be hoping for 230-250 bhp.

Im going to be using a meggy bottom end with valver head also running uprated cams aswell.

yeah T28 then only gonna need T3 over 350bhp

hmm, i think that you don't make differece between the turbos.
1. you must know(plan) what amount of boost you are going to have.
2. you must know(plan) in which rev you need this boost.
3. After the to points above you must make some calculations

for example
your engine is clio 16v 1800 cc
you plan to drive at 1.5 bar boost with your stock gearbox which means that you want to have full boost between 4500 and 7000 rpm
your pressure ratio is 2.5

your engine at 1.5 bar boost needs 19.42 lb/min of air at 4500 rpm and 30.21 lb/min of air at 7000 rpm

now you must look at the turbo compressor maps

for example:

http://www.dulgerov.com/tmp/GT3267_452233_comp.gif

Then simply watch the efficiency of the compressor.

am running T28 with low comp high boost, once i get my chip i'll let u know how it pans out!

why is everybody running T28 of T3? why has anybody use an T3/T4? problems?

What is best for a quick road 400m ride?
what is best for a quick track 400m ride?
what is the best turbo both ?

not a clue mate, am just running the one that was on the car when i bought it! not got enough money to be picky!

ahahahahha

nice one, what is your time at a 1/4 mile? ?

MAXIBOY
17-06-2007, 22:42
bb use the T28 because its small and spools up quickly i believe so there,s very little lag. T3/4 if you want over 350bhp.

dhay14
17-06-2007, 22:43
ok and what about the lag a T3/T4 makes?

Coops
17-06-2007, 22:50
not 1/4 miled yet matey, engines only just been built so needs chipping and running in!

am guessing as T3/4 is larger it will be laggier at powers under 350bhp!

MAXIBOY
17-06-2007, 22:52
its a compromise i believe. the more power the more lag. think the T28 was chosen as i produces the right amount of power vs lag. T3/4 turbo might be better but don,t think its be tested but try italy.

neil, what do you run? T4

MAXIBOY
17-06-2007, 23:03
running a T28 hybrid with slightly bigger compressor housing 360 degree bearings etc

MAXIBOY
17-06-2007, 23:04
might upgrade the manifold as above and T3/T4 but will see once its run in and remapped

Coops
17-06-2007, 23:07
that manifold is madness! take it its cuz no space for larger compressor housing where current turbo sits?

MAXIBOY
17-06-2007, 23:20
yes mate i think any thing bigger will struggle. plus i,m not sure the clio will be drivable with more than 350bhp. be a shame to spend 1500 quid on a new manifold and turbo for it not to be drivable

but someones going to have to find out.

they might now in italy but my itailian is shit so we need an interpreter really to get some more info.

GT28R or RS would be the biggest I'd use.

AFAIK a T25/28 is a hybrid - a T2 Exhaust housing with a T3 compressor housing, to go to a full T3 would increase the lag by a LOT unless you start thinking about Nitrous Oxide

bass_direct

use nitrous for anti lag and a t88 8)

Yeh they do , but cossie's use t3's also but have a larger exhaust housing(exc rs500)

the garret gt series is well worth a look at, id highly recomend the gt28rs, anything bigger and it starts getting laggy

if your going to buy a turbo get one from the USA, shed loads cheaper than UK!

Justin..

but watch out for fake garretts!

my friend just bought a GT28RS for his 220 turbo engined 214, good for 290bhp aparently, hardly any lag and its so fun to drive.

DaveH
13-07-2007, 20:32
T3's and T4's are notorious in the ford scene for making good power but being very laggy making it a mare to drive quickly which may explain some of the crappy 1/4 mile times some high power rst's run, as said the best bet are the gt series, most things roller bearing for quick spool and also a well thought out hybrid turbo.

MAXIBOY
13-07-2007, 20:41
might get a roller bearing one soon.

From what ive heard its the way to go maxi, on paper not much difference but makes it a lot more driveable- also depends what you want from it i suppose.

PLANNING to run 1.1 Bar but will eventually upgrade to 1.5 Bar

it has to remain a drivable car and has to perform on 400 m aswell

want to try a
60 Trim T3 with .48 A/R

but have my doubts because every body's runing on T25 or T28

has anybody use a T3 before and how did it performe?

MAXIBOY
16-07-2007, 23:34
try asking the italian firm above as all there are T3

rossdj1983
16-07-2007, 23:49
if you wanna go to town on it go gt28rs or the gt3071r

i got the 3071 on my pulsar- quality bit of kit

a bad tubby chioce can ruin the drive i n my opinion

and whatever you do, dont buy cheap ebay crap mate

Fixxer's right. IT'S NOT JUST A SIMPLE CASE OF BIGGER = MORE POWER + LAG.

You really do need to study the compressor maps of the turbos your interested.

For example you can get a t25, t28, and t3 - ALL with .60 trim compressors and they'll all have different characteristics. You can't just make assumptions just based on the T-number. There are loads of different combinations of a/r and trim for turbine and the compressor.

I got loads of books out, did airflow calculations, plotted compressor maps, and I must admit I still don't quite understand it all.

Lag, boost threshold and all that several factors, not whether or not it's a T3.

No offence to anyone, but I don't think ANYONE in this thread (including me!) knows enough on this subject to tell you for sure.

Best to ask an expert!!

i did mate. spoke to vince at cr turbo,s and i,m now running a gt28rs roller bearing turbo good for in excess of 340bhp so i,m informed with very little lag.
will let you know how it performs as soon as i,m running.

i run the same turbo as neil, its not excessively laggy for what it is, his cams and headwork will help in his application tho as well
