View Full Version : DISCS
Hi all,
Fitting a set of willwoods soon , what discs do you reccomend for my track car?
Grooved/drilled or STD?
And where is best place to get a good deal?
R60139 BRAKE DISC-VENT 280mm CLIO 2.0 16V (CB0N) 27.50
these any good
280mm is for the 172/182, you need 259mm for a mk1
not unless u have the 172 spec on the williams ?
either way id stick with std, be it 259mm or 280mm whichever u have!
Grooved are usually ok but drilled can crack

Grooved tend to warp instead. Std always was the best in the Ritchpeed days. 8)
Cheers

While anyone is reading this thread, any reccomendations on what brake fluid to go for?
Dot 5 to heavy duty?
Mine runs mintex blue from memory
But normal dot 5 will be fine.

I wouldn't bother with DOT 5 for a track car. Go for DOT 5.1 unless you are sure that you have flushed all the old fluid out of the system, including the calipers, etc. (DOT5 fluid is incompatible with 3/4/5.1). Castrol SRF is one of the best fluids out there, highly recommended, but pricey!
cheers
i presume 5.1 is for race cars then?
This may be of help for fluid choice: http://www.williamsclio.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=22357
5.1 is more susceptable to moisture, so you would have to rebleed it more often.
There are many high boiling point dot 4 fluids, which wont be susceptable to moisture as much so id go with some dot 4 personally.

Not specifically. The issue is that with any non-silicone based fluid they are hydroscopic and degrade over time with moisture (hence the difference between dry and wet boiling points). DOT5 IS silicone based, but rather than absorbing water they have more air and so the brake pedal feel is not as good (more spongy).
So, if you had a very rarely used road car DOT5 would be a good choice as you would never need to replace it again, even after many years. For track cars you would probably want to go DOT4/5.1 for ultimate response, but with the knowledge that you would need to bleed/replace the fluid at least once a year.
As arj256 says, once you are in the DOT 3/4/5.1 realms it is the difference between dry and wet boiling points that is key, and good DOT4s like Castrol SRF often surpass some that have DOT 5.1 ratings!
