View Full Version : Totally Random. Gear stick idea I have

I have thought about fitting a dished steering wheel (rally style) and as I cant afford the 6grand gearbox, i wondered if anyone has ever attempted to make a gear lever which has a stupidly small shift action and a lever that is twice the length of the original stick so the stick sits next to the steering wheel (height of the heater controls) yes i am sad :lol: I have always wanted one of these little gems I think it would look cool :oops:

funny you mention this, I had the same idea a few weeks ago, bit of maths and fabrication but very doable, its all about pivot points etc, got drawing somewhere i'll dig it out.

I have seen sortened standard gearsticks, but a longer one would increase the throw to much imo.

lol, your rear passengers would have to pass u the lever lol :winkey:

Unless you modified the linkage to take into account the longer stick, it would make shifts like a bus.
There wouldnt really be a gain being that high up with the normal gearshift configuration?

Having a longer gearstick only would mean longer gearstrokes. Would be like driving an old transit.

Didn't you do pivotal forces at school ? the throw at the top of the shifter would be HUGE, probaby a foot from 1st to 2nd

yes got an A-level in it :P

there is 2 pivots, one on the dash and one at the gear stick, about the same hight as a short shift. So there would be very little movement at the dash but lots at the stick
