Being a bit nosey here but out of interest how much bandwidth and space does this site use? I get rather bored with not being able to read the forum 'cause of bandwidth issues

annoying when you work out how many paying members there are and then then x the £ by that amount.

wheres the brass go?

i calculate 160+ members @ £7-00 a throw = £1120 per year for WC

can i have a break down of costings lol

I wish we turned over that amount mate.

As per the last few times we hit the limit of bandwidth with our provider - thats all....he has no better package to offer us.

Robb - we are currently doing 40gig a month.

I once went 200GB over on one of my old hosts in 2 days as someone 'Digged' a link to a computer game HD preview at £1 per extra GB, fortunatly i didnt have to pay that much

lol @ this thread. Your £7 membership for a year will not cover the ammount of posting some people do in a month. The membership fee is a pityful ammount for what we get in return tbh and people moan

As many of us know, memberships not only pay for hosting of the site, they pay for the flyers we have, the club banners for shows etc, the outlays for the nice merchadise we have as well.

A lot of clubs charge £15-£25 membership- I would imagine these clubs never have this problem as they have plenty of funds in reserve, but people here dont seem to want to pay that ammount. Catch 22 really.

Robb - Is that McPikie's car you have in your avatar there???

i read somewhere that wastegate chatter is a totaly misnomer, the wastegate doesnt actually make any noise atall, its just the noise of boost pressure going backwards through the turbo, not good!

Well ive done the arches although the colour doesnt match so im getting it done professionally, got rid of the rust on the bottom of the doors and have sprayed them up. Re-alighed the front bumper and back bumper as i found out it's been shunted in the back sometime. Theres a huge dent in the panel just after the drivers side door which i didnt know about so that'll need to be done and i have a new tailgate which is getting chopped up and welded onto the excisting one as i cant aford to get it sprayed and parcel force damaged it in transit

Yeah the tailgate on that car was fubar'd. I think the accident he had at FCS last year explains the dent after the door.

Glad your gettin it sorted though.

northy, i am willing to pay say £300 per year in return for a banner on here if that would help your hosting costs, or i could help you monetise this site properly yourself and get it earning a nice fat wedge!!!!

PM me, ive made over £3000 from this 1 website of mine since march last year, http://www.freeuksimcards.co.uk

TBH i'd rather not see banners and advertising over the site. Don't get me wrong its a very kind offer and one northy can dwell on but I think he shares the same views.

IMO it doesnt look very nice and gives the pages a cluttered look.

But I don't make the decisions so i'll leave it to the people that do.

Raise membership to £10 and get a decent hosting package I say.

Have to agree the hosting packages on that site arent very good value for money. I pay £5.50 a month for 3GB of space and 50GB of bandwidth per month.

You get what you pay for at the end of the day.

Is that a US based server?

I expect that any site that uses excessive amounts of CPU will soon get booted off that price plan/server.

The problem we have is the host is charging £5/1Gb over the standard 30Gb limit of the package.

--

@simonr85 - I don't think Northy is interested in banner ads etc. Thats why we pay membership fee's, although it may be worth mentioning to him anyway.

at the end of the day, the hosting is costing nothing this year, apart from the the bit it goes over. the package last year was so poor the guy gave northy a year/18 month free package.. i said it then, il say it again. fuk him off and get a decent server, even if it means you have to pay for it rather than get it gratis

for those of you bothered about banners this was only the first option,

we could create a new area in the forum for useful shops (which earn commission for cliowilliams) eg. a few closed topics

Car Insurance
==========
elephant
admiral
norwich union
etc

Car shops
=======
halfords
etc

High street stores
===========
Tesco
Waterstones
Game
HMV
etc

people would only visit these threads if they knew they was buying say a cd and they are happy with cliowilliams keeping the commission to help costs, there would be no banners just a text link and these would be inside a closed thread.

Even if 1 member only buys 1 thing a year through 1 of our links, every little would help

It may shock you but every purchase on the internet at least 2 or 3 people are credited with a commission

If people dont want cliowilliams getting the commission even though the cost of your goods would not change then simple, DONT VISIT THE THREAD!

hope this makes sense

Nope UK based, yeh have to agree most hosts now would just ask for more or drop the priority of the client with the site making it really slow at busy times.

banners and spammy and cheap imo

Northy doesnt need banners, the site isnt strapped for cash, it ran out of bandwidth, so? ALL FORUMS do, it's one of them things.

Unfortunalty it is a bit more complicated that that. For those who want to know.

Beteen march 2007 - march 2008 the forum hosting is indeed free due to a major loss of information we suffered in 2006. This was a way of compensation offered to us by our providers.

We pay £200 a year for our hosting. We are on a 30gig bandwidth limit.

Once we go over 30gig the site shuts. As u have found out. To open the site up again i have to buy more bandwidth.

Our provider sells bandwith at £10 a gig. For some idea how quick we can go though this £40 (4 gig) lasts only 24 hours. Although we get a free year we have paid everymonth bar jan for extra bandwith. AT GREAT COST !

The catch comes here guys. Our provider can only give us extra bandwidth 5 times in a year. Which we have had. After this he says its unfair to his other customers who suffer a slower service because we take it all. So no more bandwidth = no more forum until the end of the month. I carnt be having that as your membership covers the cost of running the forum.

In May - i added £80 bandwidth to see us through...which is a stupid waste imo but i had to do it. I am currenlty looking to swap so we never have to worry about bandwidth again.

So its not just a simple as it sounds....wc has been with the current providers for 2.5 years....but we have out grown them unfortunalty.

would 300gig per month be sufficient?

Maybe so but you've got to look at a forum better. Just 'cause it has a lot of badwidth doesnt mean it'll work for this site. A forum uses a lot of CPU power and as a result it bogs down other peoples hosting packages. Most Hosts wont allow that and would do something about it.

Daz
08-06-2007, 21:52
At £5/month including "300GB", I daren't even think about how many customers they need to make it break even, let alone make any money.. Heh.
Infact, bandwidth just isn't that cheap, let alone servers, rack space, power usage, maintenence, support contracts, etc.. at least in the UK (which is quite important if your main audience is UK based).

Good transit is important, good power uptime, solid infrastructure, all come at a cost.. :)

At £5, you're business model is based on pure volume rather than adding value to your current client base. It works, definetly.. and it definetly has it's place.

I know WilliamsClio isn't *THAT* large, but, even on shared hosting, people are going to get a bit upset, as there would still be significant database activity etc..

Not sure what sort of database load you're seeing here, but peak times, ClioSport hits 120+ queries per second to the database.. the post table alone has 2.5million+ rows, so you can imagine the sort of load it generates.

As the database gets larger here, and usage increases, you're going to need some sort of solution in place to grow.

Anyway, that's my view.. :)

Good luck :D

Daz
08-06-2007, 21:55
(Just to add, I know ClioSport is larger, but what I'm saying is, database load increases signficantly with users.. and in order to grow, you need to be able to cope with it.)

Remember, a single refresh of the main page may generate many queries.. ClioSport can generate like, 12 queries per page! Not sure what phpBB is like in this department though :)
