If you had these in your engine, would you expect the engine to tap louder than usual?
I've just had new tappets installed in my engine, and i'm fairly sure i'm running 10w 40 oil, yet it's STILL tapping!
Any ideas?

maybe, thats some pretty wild cammage! got to be on the limit of o/e clearance and valve train components? iirc?
Thing is, engine runs really smooth? Not lumpy or anything?
Have receipts from GDI (work done by previous owner), showing the piper cams on there, and a RR printout of 160bhp, so i know it has them. Just annoying me with the tapping!
is it tappin n not tickin? have u listened under bonnet for source of noise, as my injectors are really noisy

my 274 cams came with mechanical lifters :-|
No it's definately a tapping, i could hear the injectors on my old valver engine and they were very quiet, my willy engine just sounds like an old fiesta!
If it's not the cams causing the tapping, what else could it be? Clogged oil somewhere?
Gunner, do you think my cams should have mechanical lifters?

Cams shud come with mechanical lifters i shud of thought!
check the piper site it will say if your cams need mechanical lifters.
They dont need them...these are re-grinds. Consequently they put extra loading on the valvetrain due to increased accln of follower/valve. Its far more likely that they have caused an early death of your followers.
hi mate. think he,s had new followers fitted. maybe they weren,t run in properly.
Whats the procedure for running them in?
I took my engine to a garage and had them installed, then i have just been driving it ever since i put the engine back in, but it still taps...
running in procedure.
after fitting engine and all ancilleries, start up engine, hold the revs at roughly 2000 rpm for a few minutes until all water system bled properly. then take it out n give it a really really good thrashing for a couple of hours, staying in the red line

if i was u id buy sum new Hydrolic lifters and run it on mobil 1 0 w 40 that stuff is the best IMO my engine sounds sweet as a nut!!
I've already had new ones............ still tapping

well get it checked out at a decent garage who deal with performance cars alot. they will tell u, u might just be being paranoid. take a audio recordign so we can hear it also.
what oil are you running?
whats your oil pressure like?

Well i thought my tappets were noisy, but aparently when my engine is cold andi place load on it the bottom end makes a bit of noise (nothing dangerous), but maybe you are mistaking it for this.,
if i was u id buy sum new Hydrolic lifters and run it on mobil 1 0 w 40 that stuff is the best IMO my engine sounds sweet as a nut!!
you can,t run an engine in on mobil 1. the first ten thousand miles should be on a good semi then mobil 1.

The best oil i have found to reduce tappet noise was Halfords 10 40 mineral lol

have found that mobil 1 has such good anti wear properties that it stops the rings from bedding in correctly. i never use it on a new engine.
Oh you mean for a freshly rebuilt engine? Didnt realise this had been rebuilt...or at least he hasnt said so here?
aye...you want a cheapo oil when bedding the rings in...the first 50or so miles are the most crucial, and you change oil once here. Then after couple hundred miles I change to tidy stuff, and drive as per normal. Defo dont need thousands of miles....and no redline action whilst bedding in lol
High load...medium revs is the trick for rings, with a bit of over-run after each burst of load.
