Gearboxes are made out of chocolate, so if you can, buy a spare one.....

Suggestion for the williams 1 is basically the only williams with a number plaque, rusty rear arches, rust under tailgate. Full service history is pretty much a must on these cars too.

1s were a run of 400 and were plaqued accordingly, then much to the disgust of williams1s owners they decided to do a 2 and 3 of a similar run number but without plaques. 2 was 480 and 3 was 390 i think, someone will correct me there. But ehy are all getting rarer even the ones with the funn shade of blue and hole in the roof (sorry W3 owners just jesting)

i see not really a prob for me just looking for a good example and really need to know what probs i can expect the gearbox seems fragile
crappy steering coloumns, GB that are poo, discoloured coolant, just basic maintanance of engine bays, things missing, if you get a standard one thats best. but lots have been modded. you can get a minter if you look hard enough

oh and welcome! :D
thx for the welcome does anyone think the williams 2 and 3 are ok or do you all think the best is the williams 1 :D
if i was after one to get back to/keep totally std as a collectors classic i'd get a williams 1. but my favourite is williams 2. imo willy 3 is a no go, its got a sunroof!
oh n welcome!

Williams 1's are more collectable but i would keep an open mind, don't miss out a minter just cos it's a 2.
Mat.
williams 3 all the time!!! the refined article!!! sunroof,ABS,phase 2 trim, electric mirrors and the best colour! ,monaco blue!!!!!!!!!!! plus there not as old as the willy 2 and 1
the gearbox aint that bad :? if treated right
same things to look for as any older 13-14 year old car
mainly look for rust ( arches sills boot drain holes) and service history
when starting from cold oil will be at about3 bar raises to 5-6 when driven
when warm idles at 1000rpm oil pressure should be around 1 or 0 bar
3bar at a steady 30mph rising as you accelerate
good luck finding a minter
there are 1 or 2 mint ones for sale here
williams has a plauqe ( little wing mirrors-449 blue)
willy 2 has abs + strength in doors ( different grill+mirrors+door mouldings - 449 blue)
willy3 as above + sun roof (maybe airbag?)( different grill again +mirrors+door mouldings - 434 blue)
all have same trim and engine
i prefer having a williams because of the plauqe 8)
willy 2's never had abs
willy 3's never had an airbag
scrap that then lol thought they did have abs also wasnt sure on 3's air bag
and its 432 monaco blue
one of the other shit places for rust is at the bottom of the doors - on the cars I've had the sills, bootlid and arches were not too bad but the bottom of the doors were wank
i'll close the door behind me http://www.symbolworld.org/stories/nursery/04/buckle_my_shoe/door.jpg

Might be best.
Mechanically, the 1s, 2s and 3s are identical (bar 3s having ABS) and drive exactly the same. It's only tiny trim and spec changes that seperate them (and therefore a tiny weight increase). So basically, get whichever one you find the best example of.
As above most of the common things to look for have been listed, rust areas etc.
Make sure all the dials work, the outside temp gauge and the 3 auxillary dials in the middle of the dash are common to go. If you look at a 3 also check the sunroof and aerial seal for leaks as this again is a common problem.
If you want a minter dont look at anything that does not have good history and service records. Standard examples are usually the less molested and well looked after.
