View Full Version : Heat release on a valver...remove the grille..?

Ive noticed on summer pictures that some people remove their grilles (the one in front of the radiator). Or do some do it all year round?
Does this keep the engine bay cooler?
What things can I do to keep the bay cooler?
And dont say take your IK off, please!
Cheers
Leigh

The engine bay is suppose to be hot dude  If it stays cold along with the engine with the clever low temp thermostats and fan thermo switch's, bearings etc may not expland fully which causes damage. I run a totally standard setup as oppose to thermostat, thermo switch, air filter, exhaust, grill in (temp wise). as long as the water temp doesnt go above boiling point + 5*c~ (pressurised water system) then you should have no problems 8)
yeah run a couple of cars with heat wrapped manifolds. seams to make a difference

The only reason im asking for tips is due to the old chestnut..Induction kit...the engine gets real hot with this on, sucking all that hot air towards it, especially sat in traffic, but yes i know it would stay cooler if I ran the standard airbox with a filter in it..but I can't do without that supersonic roar above 4k :o
Im gonna have to think about taking it off.
A full stainless exhaust is due next week, and im sure i'll wanna keep that IK on when the exhaust is fitted and the noise is amplified ten times..
Erghhhhhh..what do I do! :?
ive always ran std set up except the fan switch, which is a low temp one, mainly cus the fan didnt work once and had a wee accident lol
but new rad/total flush of system and good coolant it runs fine
has anyone heat wrapped a valver mani and downpipe as its kinda a funny shape compared with the williams!
try ducting cold air into the bay then it will stay cooler. maybe fit some ducts. fed cold air directly on to the filter kit.

I run standard airbox and standard air filter atm. When I flat it, it roars like a lion on orgasm  It would be louder with an open air filter but there is no need. I struggle to talk to the person in the passenger seat its so loud. Head ache

i noticed the ss manifold glows red hot after some abuse
mines been on over a year

what manifold do u run maxiboy? do u think 1 roll is enough to do a complete supersrint?
i run a turbo manifold. but i reckon you need at least one 50 foot roll maybe 2 and stainless cable ties. think screwfix is the cheapest for cable ties and ebay for the wrap
I have recently wrapped my Supersprint
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/peterj.jones/My%20Williams%20Pics/Wrapped%20Supersprint.jpg
I used 1" x 50' for the top half and ended up buying some 2" x 50' for the downpipe, and to go over the joining point.
Could probably get away with 2" x 25' For the downpipe though.

girl lol
i run a green i/k and scorpion system/decat, love the sound it makes, oh i have no interior or radio so its all you hear! love it lol esp at 7k rpm!
looks good arj!
If you heatwrap a valver manifold does it crack?
yep it can do cos its cast
i had a valver manifold done and it was fine. pain to do but ran it for 8 months no problem.. think turbo manifolds can get to hot but mine seams ok so far
Ditch the clio induction kit and get a R19 16v item (you'll need the R19 throttle body too) - its a far better system (like most things on the 19) and doesn't suffer the same heat soak.

cheers chaps,
arj256, how well does it perform? notice any gains?
are the steel tirs for the ends? if so how many do you need for a supersprint?

You could get more airflow through the bonnet by making some ally spacers up to lift the back of the bonnet by a half inch or so, then removing the grille. Would create a better flow of air through the engine bay.

clowo16v,
Is that just an idea, or has this been done?
^I've seen it done on turbo fords and a let nova...
yeah ive seen it on polo g40, let novas, rx7...

I did it on my 106 and my mate did it on a mk3 cortina with a 6.6 litre v8 in and it worked a treat.
