love teh R% turbo, some issues with reliability but then again it is a Renault :D

i prefer the looks of the 5 to the escort aswell, and there alot lighter and probably handle better 8)

Escort turbo, all the way.

You'll struggle to find a decent 5 turbo now a days, plus as above reliability issues. Which I suppose you have with almost any turbo'd car, but CVH's are a tad cheaper to fix than Reggie 5's.

I have lots of experience with both, I have owned 3 R5 Turbo's, 3 series 1 escort RS Turbo's and 4 series 2 escort turbos.

Things to watch out for on the R5 turbo -
Headgasket and cooling problems
Clutch and gearbox
Bottom suspension arms
Bodywork wise, worrying areas are sills, and around front windscreen pillar.

Things to watch out for on the Escort Turbo-
Little end bearings, if noisy have to replace pistons because they wear around the pin
Hydraulic tappets (Cheap fix)
Valve stem oil seals (cheap fix)
Metering unit can cause all sorts of problems and cant buy new.
Bodywork wise - battery tray, inner wing just between bulk head and front struts, rear arches, sills, tailgate and around the sunroof.

After having owned a few of both I would opt for the escort turbo, cheap to modify, easy to source parts for, nicer to drive. In standard form R5 would out handle, modified opposite way around.

Just my opinion.

Don't get a modded one whatever you do, even tho modded ones are loads cheaper than mint standard cars.
