I know the red eye's are used for the hard shoulder, but I remember reading something about red eye's were going to be used to stop people tailgating or something?

stop smoking crack?
well red is a warning colour, so it must be a warning for something.
WHITE Separates lanes of traffic going in opposite directions.
AMBER Marks the offside of motorways.
RED Marks the nearside of motorways.
GREEN Marks public sliproads.
BLUE Marks police only sliproads.

that doesnt explain all three lanes red tho... unles it means your coming to the end of the motor way ????
Various types of cat's eye exist. In Britain, white cat's eyes are used for the centre of a road, lane markings, or soft traffic islands. Red cat's eyes are placed along the hard shoulder of a motorway, and orange cat's eyes are placed along the edge of the central reservation. Green cat's eyes denote joining or leaving slip roads at junctions, and blue cat's eyes are used for police slip roads.

You dont look in the rear view mirror just to see what colour the cats eyes are but surely you would notice anyway! Assuming you use your mirrors of course... ;)
