Mechanically, the 1s, 2s and 3s are identical (bar 3s having ABS) and drive exactly the same. It's only tiny trim and spec changes that seperate them (and therefore a tiny weight increase). So basically, get whichever one you find the best example of.
As above most of the common things to look for have been listed, rust areas etc.
Make sure all the dials work, the outside temp gauge and the 3 auxillary dials in the middle of the dash are common to go. If you look at a 3 also check the sunroof and aerial seal for leaks as this again is a common problem.
If you want a minter dont look at anything that does not have good history and service records. Standard examples are usually the less molested and well looked after.
