weld a metal plate in, don't skim it, it'll just sag

not skimming, glue welding a metal plate either side of the recess. Then skimming with filler and painting

Best way. The heat from welding distorts the panel.

one lesson i've learnt is, you can't have anything nice these days without some scum trying to nick it, i had my rear window seal cut off and the window took out to steal my ice

fukking hell mate, thats a bitch. too many scummy shits about these days, even in the quiet areas

progress so far...

1. Lock removed
2. Area Sanded down
3. Metal plate glue welded in place (used araldite metal glue)
4. Filler Skimmed over the top
5. Sanded down filler
6. Filler reskimmed to sort out imperfections
7. Filler sanded down again

Still to come...

1. Filler skimming again (still not amazing)
2. Sanding again
3. Primer
4. Sanding
5. Paint
6. Sanding
7. Paint
8. Laquer

Take it you didn't dish teh sides of the lock hole?

You will need to leave the filler ever so slightly pround, or you will see the outline of the lock hole, spent ages getting it right on my bonnet when i smoothed that
