    inner drive shaft gaiter woes....

had a split on the passenger side inner driveshaft gaiter and had new one fitted and now leaking again... the old one had a split in the rubber but now got the car over the pit and its leaking past the jubilee clip thing.. how do you tighten them clips?

You need to find out if it's leaking from the gaitor or from the middle of the bearing part of it - not going to be an easy task I know

The clips can't really be tightened as they're usually a single use clamp type thing similar to how the fuel hoses are clamped onto the rail

    Shouldn't leak at all

Could be a faulty part, badly fitted or both, bottom of the pic shows how it all goes together

Looking like the bearing is at fault? Is sending the faulty part back an option??? Surely not wear and tear after 2 months?? And I've hardly done any mileage?

Ok, there are three 10mm bolts that clamp the metal tripod down on top of the gaitor. This is where they are more likely to leak as they are not screwed down enough. The trouble I had was the inner threads in the gearbox were slightly threaded BUT the thread goes into the box further than the bolts do, so I just used a slightly longer bolt and job done

It is easy to check if they are screwed in hard enough. Ratchet spanner and a couple of extension bars and a 10mm socket and lightly torque them to see if loose. If one has threaded you can tell as it wont tighten, so use the longer bolt option as mentioned above.

This has happened to others as well, no biggie ;)
