buying a car in the UK

    Hi,

I'm looking to buy a car in the UK and then bring back to Ireland (Brexit, exchange rate makes it attractive). As I have never done this before I'm obviously a little nervous and looking for some advice.

My plan is to stick with the autotrader website and only buy from dealers, keeping away from private sales. I would like to use the RAC for a vehicle inspection and history check and then pay a deposit using credit card. All going well I would then fly over pick up car and bring home. Has anyone used the RAC for vehicle inspections before or are better alternatives available?

I notice a lot of the dealers seem to be large supermarket type companies, are these reliable are any to be avoided?

Basically what pit falls should I be looking out for when purchasing a car in the UK (obviously I don't mean the usual things leaking oil etc)

The car in question will be at 2012- Ford Focus 1.6 tdci Titanium hatchback.

    Cheers

There are lots of used cars on eBay with low mileage. About 10 years ago I bought a Subaru Legacy saloon for £1200. It had done 68K miles with a full service history and one owner from new. Leather seats and full climate control. It's been brilliant. They weren't terribly popular when new and are cheap now. Estates are much more expensive. I still drive it every day and haven't spent much on it. The only problem is that it has a 2.5 engine that drinks fuel!

There are specialists for such transactions. If you do not want to contact intermediaries, you could simply conclude a contract with a personal accountant, visit the site. Such a specialist works remotely and conducts your financial affairs. You might ask him how to reduce taxation on an auto deal. This would clearly reduce your anxiety.
