Lots of work next week on 0217

Misfiring for a while and losing oil, affecting performance and various other things. Carb deposits are quite high in the engine and I've determined the valve stem seals are fubar, so they will be replaced by me at home and I might pop the head off if the weather holds out and give it a clean and new HG. New aux belt to go on too! Also replacing the Saab injectors I have on there as they may be needing a refurb.

Also replacing the interior dash bulbs and a new wiper stalk, as my old one snapped!

Suspension is knocking on nearside front so that will get sorted and I will be softening up the rear KW's as I want a bit more feel and roll from cornering at the back.

HID bulb blew today as well.

Massive improvement! Gonna spray the wiper arms as well and might replace the wiper system with a spare I've had in the loft for years.

So, lots of oil contamination in the combustion chamber and on the valves as I suspected. Off to get a valve spring tool then I'll be cleaning the head up tonight and the bottom end tomorrow, and putting it all back together with new parts

This is why I was getting light detonation under load due to the increased compression caused by contaminants in the cylinders, and misfires due to heavily fouled plugs. Replacing injectors as well.

Headbolts were not tightened properly, I undid them by hand with a normal ratchet spanner.

Well, tonight valves are starting to come out. So far, the head looks good, but I suspect the stem seals on the exhaust valves are a bit shit, hence the buildup of oil contamination. Pistons and rings looks good and they have zero play, which is predicted as the engine itself only has about 30k miles on it now.

For those that are learning, here is a pick of the first set of spring/collets/valve retainers and valve to come out. Note the double spring setup. This is the inlet valve, which is generally always cleaner than the exhaust valves. the last pick is a shot of the valve stem seal, which sadly my tools cannot reach to pop out:

I can go into precise detail but my enthusiasm is less than it used to be! However, it's all quite easy providing you have the time and the tools/space. The major things for this type of work is the timing belt and the head bolt removal and tightening sequence. Other than that it is just having the understanding of what to look out for. Most important is staying safe and take your time. I remember my first HG job, about 9 years ago. I did my back in taking the head off as I had to remove it with both manifolds on, and it was HEAVY. I also had shit tools, and it was ****ing freezing!
