    Knocking tunes

I've got a ticking timebomb of a speedometer cable, and of course the cure for any untoward noise in a car is very simple: turn the stereo up.

But I was slightly embarrassed by the CD player a previous owner had installed, and could never find or if I did, afford, a proper Philips one. And if I did, I wouldn't really want one with the tape deck and associated limitations.

Then I stumbled across a 22DC679 (and they say romance is dead - what a lovely name) which is not far off period, has Renault on it, and has a 3.5mm jack for the purposes of inserting a headphone output for what was then an all the rage portable CD player, but now will just as easily take an input from an iPod or one of those new fangled telephone apparatus type things.

And I've discovered a use for all my crackly old tapes.

How has anyone else dealt with the problem of the knowledge that their original tape player is probably in a landfill site after failing to sell for ten pence on a car boot sale after sitting in the corner of a garage for ten years but is now worth a King's ransom?

    That is VERY COOL.

I strongly suggest you don't go on to Ebay when tired / emotional / drunk, and look in the cassettes section.

My photo seems to have vanished not sure why, lots of problems with Photobucket today. Hopefully this works instead:

Williams1 didn't come with a stereo so I put a new Sony one in with Bluetooth and telephone built in
Works very well, only the speakers are crap
Alpine do some replacements which is next up
Think you can get them from OEM car audio

    Lads.

The W3 standard stereo is great for originality. I put up with it for a short while but the fact that I didn't want to go down the tape route I fitted a modern Bluetooth Sony cd 50w head unit. I went back to the original stereo for a short while but its very poor sound quality in comparison. I regularly use my W3 and couldn't cope with how bad it sounds. So back to the Sony. It's still poor to my other vehicles but worlds apart from the Philips thing. When the W3 goes into retirement which will be this year I will refit but for now while I'm tearing up the Tarmac I'll be bluetoothing Pete Tongs Essential Selection off the radio1 Iplayer app 😄

Id stick with a modern stereo, not these dinosaurs........unless your keeping it original.

I had a problem with the aerial with the th W1, I think the cable is damaged somewhere from the unit to the aerial so instead of running a new cable I'll be getting a new interior aerial installed. Back in the day I replaced the stereo on my first W1 with a Sony with autochanger in the boot, speakers were crap then as they are now. I resisted the temptation to cut the parcel shelf or door cards with bigger speakers. I think the W3 door speakers make a massive difference and will be replacing all with modern custom fit speakers. Pete Tong essential collections will sound much better in the summer with the windows down

    Agree mate
Keep them if you if you find a collector who wants it original but I'm upgrading to the 21st century (without cutting holes)
