Changing Clutch

Hi all,

Would one of you kind souls please provide me with the steps needed to change a clutch please.. I get that it has to come out the bottom and I have a lift..

I wouldn't mind getting stuck in and having a go..

so Im presuming I will need
usual tools (socket set and hammer)
engine jack, the bigger the better I guess..
new clutch to fit (along with bush and possibly new fork)
Clutch alignment tool, ive read somewhere? (necessary?)

anything i've missed please shout..

what do I need to do to remove it all and remove the old one please

14mm halfords deep socket is perfect as an alignment tool on a mk1, better than any other tool I've used to do it on a mk1 as well

can anyone tell me if there are any guides to do this? have searched but can only find issue's regarding clutches.. also found an old thread where it appears Paddy had a similar problem to me, but the outcome was the wrong clutch in the right box.. mines been on for a few years.. when engine was running, couldn't get any gears, start it in gear it wants to go.. could get all gears when engine off... Linkage all checked.. but now the problem has gone away.. I can get all gears with or without the engine on and the car is drivable.. but I don't trust it to get me anywhere.. never knew that clutches fix themselves...

Best advice,take it to someone with an engine lift or buy one.

Second best advice..Drop the subframe,undo the gearbox and slide the new clutch in.
Plenty of bits to undo but doable.

Remove wheels,undo caliper's and tie them up.
Undo struts from hub.
Undo balljoint and subframe stabiliser bar.
Remove heatshield.
Remove exhaust downpipe.
Undo gear linkage.
You may get away with driveshafts not having to be removed on the nearside but it can place stress on it
when moving/dropping the gearbox out.
Drop the subframe.(Someone said it can be done by not completely dropping the subframe but its very tight and you wont really get to see whats going on when putting the new clutch in).
Place something under the engine to hold it steady when removing gearbox.
Remove wiring loom from gearbox.
Place another small jack/lift under the gearbox.Something on wheels but stable is very helpful.
Undo the dogbone and the gearbox mount.
Undo the bolts attaching gearbox to engine.There are a few so make sure you find them all before trying to pry the box from the engine.
