    Ideas for Williams project

    Hello all, its been a good wile since I have been on here and glad to be back.
    having had my Trophy and then my current mk1 Focus RS but have always kept my Williams 3 in the shed at home, it hasn't been on the road for quite a few years.

    Anyway I have been on the lookout for a new toy and had been hoping to go for a bigger much more powerful car but couldn't settle on anything

    So the other day I had a brain wave, rather than buying yet another car, I should do what Iv always wanted to do and get my own Williams sorted.

    Now delema is I am not sure what direction to go down as regards engine, do I stick with the f7r or go down the F4r route, purely as there seems to be more popular parts wise.

    My first thoughts were to Turbo it, which would be open to decent power, but I already have the focus for a turbo and I would end up with two turbo cars round the 300hp mark, so thinking a well built engine around ITB's could be more fun?

    Whats the general opinion for fun and enjoy ability between turbo and ITB's? The gearbox, brakes, and suspension will be straight forward and the body will get a good tidy up.

    Any opinions greatly appreciated

    Turbo in a mk1 clio is crap, too much torque, the chassis can't cope with it & ruins the handling so it's only any good in a straight line.

    All depends on how you want to use the car but to do it properly none of it will be cheap, it can be done relatively cheap but you'll most likely end up doing it twice so more costly in the long run.
    The best place to start is to address the issue of the open diff, driving the FRS should be enough to convince you of the benefits of having an LSD

    I should have mentioned that an LSD will be essential, once you get used to one you couldn't go back!!

    I don't mind spending to do a good job, I'd rather take a year or two doing it right without compromising.

    That's what was drawing me towards buying a second engine to build so the car would be mobile while the work is going on.

    Gripper, Quaife & there's a couple of others that I can't remember off the top of my head as well. Plenty available as they fit all JB & JC gearboxes which are all essentially the same fitment wise right from the R5GTT to the 182 Trophy, which have all been used in competitive motorsport for well over 20 years so not an unusual or uncommon thing to find.

    Another thing to consider regarding how the car will be used is the type of LSD to go for. For serious hard track use with big power the plated type diffs such as Gripper will be better suited, but they're more hardcore & brutal in how they work and that might be a bit off putting in a normal-ish road car. If that's the case then the ATB diffs like Quaife would be more suitable

    Thinking in the case of my Williams an aggressive LSD wouldn't be a problem as it going to be used purely for fun.
