    I can make a guess on this and say it's because usually when parked on the road this door faces out into the traffic.

    I can rememmber many years ago a freind had a brand new mk 4 Cortina which he used to park on the main road outside work, after a fairly short period of time the
    drivers side was completely shot... just a theory.

    Also has the filler neck and associated pipes which can hold more dirt/moisture.

    When you say you have a passenger side Mat is it a good one that could be cut out? Must dig some pictures out of the rust. Been really busy doing my garden I meant to do months ago before the cold weather comes!

    Filler caps trap moisture, rain water runs down into the petrol cap and seeps into the arch. This area inside is poorly protected. Best protect with zinc primer if your doing the job properly.

    Not a great pic but this is what the drives arch is like, the passenger side only has a bit towards the rear bumper mounting but I think the passenger has had a minor repair to it before.
