Since you now know you have a dizzy take it off and check inside for wear on any of the four contacts and on the rotor arm. They are cheap to replace so worth changing if any real wear is apparent and see if your problem goes away.

Sounds like the classic lambda sensor fault if it's 'chugging' on idle and stalling, it'll feel like something is holding you back when it's cold as well and suddenly it will burst into life, then repeat until it's warm

Ok guys, drove it home from derby tonight, no issues, its having a recon box tomorrow due to problems I won't bore you all with. One concern I had was it smelling of petrol though the vents and at the exhaust, but pop the bonnet, no smell, nothing. Rather odd but I'll monitor it.
