I was gonna say it deffo looks it being a phase1 valver with no sunroof but it being an L plate has me a bit confused now as I thought all the cup cars went on an H plate

Nah, they go on a plate related to the year the car was built, mind you it could have been a re-shelled car in 93/94 & that would explain the L reg

When I imported cars the registration offices went on year of build I think, so yea, maybe you are right...but I have also seen very late reg plates on Clio Mk1's too, like the Willy 3's on R plates I think?

All cup cars came with full VIN and Oval plate. Mostowners / Teams didn’t bothered to register them as they were race cars only.

These cars were driven hard and picked up a lot of damage - reshells were verycommon over the years.
This led to ID's being lost or swapped around between cars. A new shell camewith no ID.

After the cup series finished a lot of the cars needed to be registered to be eligibleto enter into other championships. A 'get around' to this was to use theidentity of a road going valver and swap it over. Job done. All you had to dowas a colour change.

If the owner could prove when it was made (VIN number was present) it would goon a 1990 H reg plate. If no VIN was present the DVLA would issue a VIN numberand it would go on a Q plate.

This cup car was registered in 1996 but the DVLA database lists the DOM as1993. So the L reg therefore is correct. It was probably bought new for thestart of 1993 season!

The williams we have seen on P and R registration plates were down to fact theywere late registered new cars. That’s all. They had been sat aroundunregistered beforehand.
