All the time would seem too hot. Mine sometimes exceeds the 1st quarter mark on hot days, but now the weather is cold I can't remember it going over the first quarter!

Well that's a constant load of work for the engine to do. But I would consider that to be too hot if it was my car - there would have been a chilly mass of air hitting the rad so temp is too high in my opinion. But if it wasnt getting higher and higher and stayed constant I wouldn't be too concerned. Just keep an eye out, into the last third and that's when I would really start to worry!

That's too hot if you're cruising at 70/80.

Coolant system flush and new thermostat in order! Check your fan works, it should be cutting in at that temperature.

fan should only come on while the car is stationary . its used for drawing air over the radiator

if the car is moving forward at more than 10 mile an hour fan should be totally redundant .

if running hot as well as the above header tank and cap could be suspect

Just a thought but could the temperature sender be giving the gauge a false reading

Still not sure on this surley if it's running far too hot like people say then the expansion bottle top would release excess pressure and steam and then when cold the water level should be down but it's not moved

Your readings are fine, pretty sure that's where the standard thermostat should keep the temperatures anyway even on the motorway.

It needs to run at that temperature to keep your heater nice and toasty. Would recommend a lower temperature thermostat for the summer months though.

Where's the best place to get a low temparature stat from or would it hurt if I just took the stat out all together. I did that with an old mini I used to have :P
